do i need a bouncer and a swing?

i think i'll definitely want a bouncer since it's smaller, and i can bring it in the kitchen, and bathroom with me when i shower.   do i need a swing too?  do most babies really like/use them a lot?

Re: do i need a bouncer and a swing?

  • we used both all the time with DD and plan on using both with this baby too!  I even borrowed the smaller travel type swing from a friend to have one on different levels of the house!

  • I used both a lot.
  • We obviously haven't used them yet, but we have both.  Our friends who were concerned about space, just got a travel swing in addition to a bouncer and it worked perfectly and took up way less room.

  • My DS loved them both. We got the swing from a friend, I'm not sure I would have gotten one otherwise. I have heard some babies just aren't fans of the swing. You could consider getting a used swing since they are pretty price if you buy them new (at least the FP Ocean Wonders).

  • We had both for ds, though he LOVED the swing, but not so much the bouncer. At least he had a choice, and now we have both for this new baby.

  • my son much prefers the swing.  we will probably use the swing the entire first year (with a little push) and the bouncy chair was useful for about 4 months max.  But every baby is different and I didn't have the best bouncy seat so maybe you should try them out by borrowing from a friend before you purchase

  • We use both for different things.  We use the swing for naps and DS plays in the bouncer when I need to get things done.  It's easy to move around the house if I'm doing laundry, taking a shower, etc.  Some babies do hate on or the other though.

  • We have both, obviously haven't used it yet. But we got a travel swing so it's just a portable around the house as the bouncer. It all depends on your baby. I have friends whose kids loved both and some whose baby hated the swing.

  • We have 2 bouncers and 2 full-sized swings. Sanity savers all of them. Our living room looks pretty ugly with all the baby stuff in it, but my babies are happy so that = happy Mommy. All of our stuff is FP Ocean Wonders. Love it. IMO, a bouncer and a swing are def. necessary.

  • We have both(FP Little Lamb & FP Rainforest bouncer) and they have both been lifesavers.  DS has acid reflux so from day 1 we've used the swing to set him in(obviously not in motion) after he eats.  The bouncer took a little longer for him to like, he just started to sit in it and enjoy it over the last week.  Are both absolutely necessary?  Probably not, but I'm one that if it gives me an extra 5-10 minutes a day then it's well worth it :-)

  • We're going with the Graco Swing and Bounce - the bouncy seat snaps out of the swing frame, so it's both a traditional bouncer and a traditional swing in one.

  • I've read somewhere - can't remember where - that it might be best to wait on purchasing either until after the baby is born.  It said something like seeing what the baby likes in getting calm - light bouncing in your arms, versus gentle swaying.  What do you guys think about that?  I hate to waste $$ on a swing if it turns out the baby hates it.
  • DD loves the swing.  I wasn't going to get one but ended up with a hand me down and SO glad that we have it!  There are times when nothing else seems to work and the swing always does the trick on making her happy or sleepy!  We just got a bouncy chair thing yesterday from a friend and DD seems skeptical of it and not too happy about being in it quite yet.

  • We bought a swing from friends - great deal!  And another friend offered to let us borrow her bouncer so we'll probably do that!
  • We've used both a lot.  For the first couple months, the bouncer was DD's favorite place to be and I thought the swing was a waste of space.  Then she went through a phase where she hated the bouncer and liked the swing.  Then came a phase when the swing was the ONLY way to get her to go back to sleep in the middle of the night.  Now she thinks both are just okay and its all about the jumperoo.  I definitely think a swing is a great thing to get used since they're so pricey and not all babies like them, ours was a hand-me-down.
  • Personally, I bought both just to cover my bases.

Turns out Liam would only use the swing for sleeping, he hated being in it awake.
It was also the only thing that would calm him down and put him to sleep for a couple weeks. Life saver. A bouncy seat doesn't really do the trick, especially for hours at a time - since you have to manually bounce it, while a swing does the work for you when you just need a break.

And he absolutely LOVED the bouncy seat. It was the only way I could get anything done the first few months, he loved to sit in it and just what was going on.

I would recommend getting both, we got a second hand bouncer and it worked just fine.
