Gall Bladder Pain?

Has anyone experienced a gall bladder attack while pregnant?

I have been experiencing severe upper abdominal pains for about 3 weeks. The pain is in my chest and wraps around my right shoulder and into the shoulder blades. It is not heartburn.

I am going to call the MD on Monday

Re: Gall Bladder Pain?

  • Definitely call ASAP. I've know 2 people now have gall bladder attacks either while they are pregnant or shortly after they give birth and it's made their delivery difficult. Don't want to scare you, just make sure you call right away.

  • yes I have been having it for months...but gall bladder pain usually doesn't wrap around...kidney stone pain does.  So I would call!

Oooh, not totally true.  Gallbladder pain very often does wrap around! Get to the doctor right away if you're having an attack.  I convinced myself it wasn't my gallbladder when I was pregnant and it ended up really effing with my liver levels when I finally dealt with it a year later.

  • I don't want to scare you either, but I wouldn't wait until Monday.  Gall bladder pain most certainly does wrap around,  and I had to have emergency surgery in November to get mine removed.  A week later the surgeon told me that I was days away from it rupturing.  A simple U/S of your gallbladder will determine the condition of it.

  • I had gallbladder problems when I was pregnant the first time around.  First they tried to tell me it was labor.  I told them it wasn't, and they wouldn't believe me.  When I proved to be right, then they tried to tell me it was just gas and sent me home.  I knew it wasn't, but there wasn't much I could do.  It wasn't until my son was 3 weeks old that they FINALLY figured out I had a "whole bunch" of gallstones and ended up having to have it removed.

If I were you, either call now and have them check it out.  Also, avoid any fatty foods until you do go in.  Fat will set off attacks, if it's your gallbladder.

  • I have had gallbladder pain since 16 weeks!  I had a few attacks in the last couple years prior to pregnancy.  It does radiate up the right side of my back too.  Mine hurts with fats, sugar, well just about anything:(  I am going to have an ultrasound and get it out or break up the stones asap after birth.   Good luck!
