Baby Names

Does this name age well?

I recently posted about having baby name remorse with my little boy whose name is Chance.  He's a couple weeks away from turning one year old.

My question is....do you think Chance will age well?  I think that's my big concern with it and I've never known anyone named Chance.

Re: Does this name age well?

  • I'm sure you'll get more responses from namers with more brain power than I have at the moment, but I did want to say that it's hard to tell with a word name. I don't know anyone named, Chance either (except an old cat I had). It's also not a name I think has a long history anyone can immediately recall, like Alexander, Robert, George etc...these are the names of people in history, or people we know etc. That said, I have a word name for my first name, and it doesn't really have a choice but to age with me. I don't know if it will age well...maybe having a Grandfather named Chance is cooler than having a dad named, Change if that makes any sense.

  • I've never met a Chance, but I think it seems versatile.

I am a liitle curious about your name remorse. Personally, I think it's a fine name. Are you getting negative reactions, or does he just not seem like a Chance?

  • I'm going to be very careful as to how I phrase my words, because I know this is a fragile situation.

While I definitely would not choose this name for my own son, I think it has the potential to become a good name for a growing boy.

However, I can not see a 70 year old named Chance. But then again, I can't see a 70 year old Nevaeh or Jaiden or Addicin.

You at least spelt it right and weren't creative.

  • I think it does. I know a man named Chance who I went to school with. Also, there's a show called Human Target and the main character's name is Chance.

ETA, I think it ages well because to me it sounds like one of those older Virtue Names (Temperance, Patience, Hope, Faith, Amity, etc.).

  • I haven't gotten any negative reactions that I know of but of course you don't know what people say behind your back! :-)   He seems like a Chance now but after a year's time, I still don't feel confident with the name.  I truly wish I would've chosen something more common like Evan, Brady, or Colin.  However, my husband loved the name Chance and with its meaning of "good fortune" and the fact that I ran out of time, we chose it.  I miscarried 3 times before having him so we thought it was meaningful.  I can tell you I've literally cried over this numerous times and I have no one to tell and nothing to do about it except to continue to live with the regret.  I've tried to talk to my husband about it and he's 100% against changing it.

There are too many Evans and Bradys and Colins. The world needs a few more Chances.

The meaning behind the name is beautiful.

  • I know someone in his 20's named Chance, I think it's fine.

  • I taught a boy named Chance and never thought anything bad about the name. I agree with pp that it seems like one of the virtue names, which age well!

I love the meaning behind your name choice.

Enjoy your baby and don't second guess your decision.

    It's a great name!

  • A nurse I work with is named Chance! I can't say I'd heard the name on a person before I met him (I still remember Chance as the dog's name in Homeward Bound lol) but I must say that it suits this particular 50+ year old gentleman perfectly! I like the name as a whole. It's different while not being too *out there*
  • Chance is a great name!  Stop second guessing yourself.  It will age just as well as the trendy names of today.

I agree with all of this -- though picturing a 70-year-old Chance isn't quite as difficult for me for some reason.

I particularly agree with the remark about the spelling.  I have a friend and I knew her son's name was "Chance" and I had assumed for the longest time it was spelled that way... nope... it's spelled Chantz.  Really?!

I once had a student named Chantz.

Cried over this? Come on, it's not that serious! Don't beat urself up. Chance is a really nice name and has a great meaning according to you....it's def a name that wouldn't seem weird on an old man but why are u even thinking about something like that now vs. when you were preggers?
