Would you take a newborn to a movie?

My mom asked me to go to a movie with her this weekend and I said no because of course I have DS. Anyway, she acted like I was crazy when I said I wouldn't take him to a movie. Am I being crazy? I think the noise would be too loud, but on the other hand all he does is sleep so I could take him in his car seat...what would you do?

I wouldn't take a newborn to a movie because I wouldn't want to be that person with a crying baby in the theater. You never know when LO is going to have a meltdown, and I would want to be considerate of the other movie-goers.

Well, what I always heard from veteran moms was the newborn stage is the BEST time to take them! They really are pretty easy to settle during that time. A bottle or boob and if necessary a swaddle.

We didn't do it but my B and SIL took my nice to two movies when she was new. They fed her right before and she slept the whole time. I guess it's up to you and what you are comfortable with!

H and I have talked about this.. it depends what movie, if it wasn't action and would be fairly quiet, I would. With the understanding that if LO started crying, we would leave. We haven't done it, though.

No way would I take my newborn to a movie. First of all, think of all the germs being coughed around in there. Second, at least for the sake of other people, I don't think bringing a possibly noisy newborn would be very considerate.

Movies are too expensive to miss if LO has a meltdown. And as PP mentioned, I don't want to be that parent.

Liam was a month old when we took him to Harry Potter. He didn't cry. He slept the whole movie in his car seat except for 1 diaper change.

Funny you should post this... DD is dying to see Tangled and I'm considering taking her to the earliest showing on Monday, but I'd have DS with me. I haven't made my decision yet, but I'm leaning towards going.

Theres lots of movie theaters that have a day and time for moms with babies.

I've taken DS to about 4 movies, It's called Stars & Strollers. Theres tons of moms and babies there, and the theater even puts out a change table right outside of the theater. In the Vancouver area it's at 1pm every thursdays. They play 2 different moives every week.

I wouldn't go during the evening, But i would probably go in the day during the work week. hardly anyone would be there.

I would never take him to an evening movie, but i would consider going on a monday at noon. when i know i would proably be the only one in there. i haven't mostly becuase i can go to S&S on thursdays. you should go, When i went to see Life as we know it, the place was packed. sure you hear the occasional crying or fussy baby, but it really doesn't bother you.

Uhhhhh...my daughter is almost 15 months old and I've never taken her to a movie. In fact I've only seen two movies in the theater since she was born and that was because we had a grandparent over watching her. I wouldn't take a newborn, that's a recipe for disaster. Plus there's so many germs in theaters, we rarely took DD out before 6 weeks and that wasn't to sit around in some stuffy building...no way!

Yep. DD2 has been twice. HP7 when she was about 4 weeks and Little Fockers on Christmas Eve (family tradition) - she slept through both of them We took DD1 to a movie when she was a newborn too and she also slept through it as well. We just get there early, I feed them beforehand and sit on an aisle near the front and were ready to exit at any sign of fussiness, works for us!

This. I've been in movies where the sound effects hurt my ears. I can't imagine what that would be like for a baby.

we took DD to megamind at a place called chunkys. it is family friendly, serves food. we fed her while we ate. I put her in the moby wrap and she fell asleep. it was great. she did cry out a few times, and i hushed her. it was great.

We took DS to two or three movies when he was very small. Always early afternoon showings, and usually at a "cheap theater" so that it wouldn't be as big of a deal if he did fuss. It seems like people don't mind as much if someone is noisy in a movie that they only paid $1 to see. We made sure to pick "quieter" movies- no loud action scenes- and DS slept the whole time anyway.

We took LO to Harry Potter when he was 1 month. We had a big plan... bath, bottle, many many layers of clothes and blankets. I held him in the theater because I knew it would be too packed for his car seat. He didn't make a peep. And the noise level? Nothing bothered him until he very very last scene. It was way easier than expected.

Yes! I took my daughter when she was 6 weeks to see Yogi Bear with my other children! She was fine...not a peep! She slept the whole time.

I may get flamed for this, but we took DS with us when we saw True Grit. It was not as loud as I had expected, we brought a BM bottle and he ate right before the movie then passed out and slept the whole time. I had him swaddled and held him the whole time, and covered his ears if I thought it was going to get loud. He didn't even flinch haha. BUT, I was really nervous the entire time because I didn't want to be the mom in the theater trying to quiet/leave with her crying baby. Its really up to you and what you feel comfortable with, and of course, you know your baby best, and if LO will be okay during the movie.

Must be a Canuck thing! Empire Theatres calls it "Reel Babies". In St. John's it's every second Wednesday. I'm hoping to go to one soon!
