Ella started really wearing shoes around 8 months. We went and got her a pair from stride rite that were made with a solid but not rigid sole when she started cruising more around 9 months.
I don't remember the exact reasoning (might have something to do with alcohol) but if you're going to be indoors, I would leave them barefoot. Its best for the foot. That's why those barefoot running shoes are so popular right now.
