NYE Traditions

Can you tell I really don't want to pack for tonight? I'm such a huge procrastinator!!

Do you guys have any traditions? New Year's Eve traditions or New Year's Day traditions?

In my family we always hide money outside on New Year's Eve and retrieve it on New Year's Day. It represents there always being enough money found to live throughout the coming year. Everyone always has their own box of money with coins from their year of their birth. I even have one for Aurora. Although I'm still looking for dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollar coins for 2010. I think we are going to put her coins at the columbarium tonight and pick them up tomorrow. Our boxes we'll just hide somewhere outside. Not sure if we'll do it at our house or the house we are staying at tonight.

On New Year's Day we always have duck. Mmmmm. I can't wait for that tomorrow!

  • I'm making a duck tonight too...but I am not real sure how to cook it...do you know how?

We really don't have any traditions...I'll probably sit around and watch TV while DH works until midnight and drink for awhile.

LOL You're asking the wrong person!!! My father always cooks it. I dread the day when the tradition gets handed down to me.

  • At midnight after we toast the new year, we run outside and bang pots and pans - seems to be a tradition in Pittsburgh - to keep the bad spirits away.  We also put change on the window sills to welcome prosperiety into our home.

On New Years Day we eat new year pretzel for breakfast (a pastry shaped like a giant pretzel with icing on top) - it's supposed to bring wealth and success.  Then we go to my aunt's for dinner and we always have pork and sauerkraut - yum!!

What time should I be at your aunt's tomorrow?  I love me some sauerkraut!!!  It's my favorite!!!  Yummy!!

Steph you have some awesome traditions!  We just make snack foods and eat ourselves senseless while watching the ball drop.  Tonight we'll be toasting with sparkling whit grape juice.  If DH or I make it to midnight I'll be shocked!

  • Thanks ladies for the ideas I swear I'm gonna do every single one of them to bring us good luck in 2011 since 2010 fvcking blew.

My mom cooks black eyed peas which are disgusting but she always made me eat one. I think I'm gonna cook some cabbage since that's support to bring you more money. I'll take what I can get at this point!

  • When my great-grandmother was alive she would do this thing with silver dollars on our palms. She would say "Cross your palm with gold and silver" and then something in italian, I think, while making crosses on our palms. We don't really have any traditions anymore.

  • We get a cup full of grapes (12 grapes to be exact) and eat them before the new year.  It represents 12 months of good luck.

After the ball drops and we finish hugging and kissing each other, we get in a circle and pray for the past year and the future year.  I REALLY  hope I don't cry during the prayer.  Knowing me, I probably will. Crying

  • Side note: pork and sauerkraut makes me want to hurl. It's popular here for New Year's and DH made it last year (I think). It stunk up our house for days.

We don't do anything in particular. It'd actually an oddity that both of us are not working this year, so we're going to a friend's party.

  • That's a neat tradition.  We don't do anything exciting for New Years.  This will be the first one in awhile that I haven't worked until 11:00 or later.  Enjoy yourselves tonight!

  • That is a great tradition! How sweet that you have one for Aurora.

One thing I love, which I've already started today, is watching The Twilight Zone marathon all day today and tomorrow.

And at the party we go to most years, we celebrate each time zone's new year with a fresh bottle of champagne. That is a fun one!

  • ::gasp:: You are eating duck?!?  Oh my gosh!  :p

We don't really have any fun traditions...we kiss at midnight....

I need to come up with one obviously.

Fun fact: Rod Serling was born and raised in Binghamton. He actually went to elementary school a block away from my house, and the high school is only 3 blocks away. The 5th graders here study him and his daughter comes for Rod Serling Day.
