Best way/method/unit to organize toys??

Christmas just exploded toys in our house.  Help!

Re: Best way/method/unit to organize toys??

  • What kind/size toys do you have?  We have a playroom with a walk in closet, I had DH line the sucker with shelves (it had just 1 shelf at 5 ft).  It fits all of the trucks, board games, little people, etc.  Big toys are an issue in our house.  We have a L&L Home, the old L&L Kitchen (now it's much smaller and more compact), and a few other large toys, none of these fit on shelves.  I have a laundry basket in our living room for smaller toys that will fit in it.  I have a laundry basket in the playroom closet for all of DS1's big train pieces (obsessed with Thomas the Train) b/c you can fit more in one space when you don't have to lay them all neatly, I plan on getting another basket for the playroom closet for the trucks.  Baskets, bins, and shelves will help more than anything IMO.

  • toy boxes are not good - kids never get to the bottom of them so lots of toys end up not played with.  It's best to have toys on some sort of shelf - so they can be seen (this is from my teaching days).

we have the expedit shelves from Ikea and LOVE them. We have the biggest one and it fits an insane amount of toys. Some are in cube bins, some are out on the shelves, and a few of the shelves we have for books. We love it.

the amount of toys we have now compared to when Griffin was 1y/o is just insane. So plan ahead for having more and more toys- it adds up FAST.

  • I feel your pain, our house is the same way.  I'm getting a big box and throwing about 1/3 of the toys in it and putting it in the closet.  I'll pull it out in a few months and rotate toys.  I also plan on donating some of them.

Also, we turned our dining room into a play room and put a big bookshelf in there.

  • I got this at Toys R Us for $60 and LOVE it!  It holds WAY more then I thought and it's all at his level, and the bins are perfect for him!
