Anna has some issues.
1st, she has bilateral developmental hip dysplasia. Her right hip is
dislocated and her left is subluxed. After an initial appointment with a
real douchenozzle out here in East Brunswick, we've decided to follow up at CHOP. Her prognosis is good, it's just really
difficult because she's in a Pavlik harness (you can google if you're really interested) and it's making things
really complicated for us. ANd of course i'm still worried about the
small chance that my 5 pound baby is going to potentially need surgery.
Oh,
and guess who had a choking episode the day daddy went back to work, in the 20
minutes between when he left and Nana got here to sit with mommy? I know
what happened... she was nursing and got a milk bolus a bit too big for her
to handle. I happened to look down, she was purple and had milk coming
out of her nose. Panic in 0-60. I started smacking her on her the back
and screaming at her to start breathing. Talk about completely losing my
mind. Not bad for being a RN for 12 years and certified in CPR for 20. pathetic. Anyway, So, she's now on an apnea monitor now for at least a month. It's
simply precautionary. My doctor calls it "wearing a belt when you've
already got suspenders". The good thing about the monitor, is that Anna
won't sleep with the brace on (which we're not allowed to take off
ever). So, my pediatrician has given us permission to sleep her on her
stomach as long as she's on the monitor. It helps. And as far as I'm
concerned it's the only reason why i'm not fighting having the monitor
anymore. She hasn't had a real alarm, but she's had tons of false ones.
My favorites are the bradycardia alarms while she's screaming her head
off. But if having the monitor allows her to get some rest, I'm not fighting it anymore.
Our biggest issue right now is her weight and breastfeeding.
She was doing really well, and is still nursing really well.
Unfortunately, around christmas, for reasons unknown, my supply tanked.
I'm working with 2 Lactation consultants to try to get things to pick up
(and all signs point to positive), but her weight has dropped
dangerously low (she lost 6 ounces in 5 days) and she's hovering right
arouund the 5 pound mark (5-1 according to my LC, 4-15.5 according to my
pedi). So, we had to start formula the other day (i'm using Baby's Only
Soy - which is an organic that uses a non chemical process to extract
the DHA and ARA proteins), which was devastating for me. I've spent the
first day crying while giving her bottles. But I'm firmly attached to my
breast pump as I'm typing this, and we're hopeful we'll be able to turn
around my milk production. The good news is that at her weight check yesterday, she's up 7 ounces from the speed fall the other day. So,
bottles are agreeing with her, and if I have to pump until she's 1, i
will. So, now she's getting a combination of whatever I can pump and formula
to equal 2 - 2 1/2 oz/ feed. She's only gotten 2 formula only bottles...
the 1st one and one today (when I didn't pump because there were people
here, and I pump for almost 45 minutes sometimes).
The only
other thing Anna has going on right now is that she has a very small Ventricular Septal Defect (heart defect) that we're already seeing a cardiologist for and she isn't remotely
concerned about it. She's going to do another echocardiogram in 3 weeks to make
sure it's closing on it's own, but doesn't anticipate it causing any
issues or requiring any intervention whatsoever. Her oxygen level is great - but it is causing a loud murmur.
On
top of all of this, i've been supposedly recovering from major
abdominal surgery. Like taking care of myself has been a priority. I got
my ass handed to me at my OB follow up yesterday.
That's all with us! Aren't you oh so glad you asked? How are you guys and happy new year!
