Cloth Diapering

Hello Ladies,

So I really want to try cloth diapering but I am totally clueless, I have done a little reserch and it seems a little overwhelming. I think I am also getting a little intimidated because MIL and my grandmother keep telling me I "Won't do it" they say I won't have time or that I will be frusterated or grossed out. I find this a little offensive bc I am not a lazy person or one who gives up easily, both my mom and MIL used cloth diapers so why can't I? I am determined to show them I can do it and will do it! Can someone give me some tips/advice? T.I.A.!

Looking online it says I will need the following:

24 to 36 cloth diapers.

0 to 3 all-in-one diapers.

4 to 6 cloth diaper covers.

12 to 24 doublers. (What are doublers?!)

1 diaper pail.

2 to 3 dozen cloth diaper wipes.

  • Loading the player...
  • Doublers are an extra insert for overnight/heavy wetting, etc.

I really like these two websites for info: https://www.kellyscloset.com/Cloth-Diaper-Information_ep_34-1.html

I have been slowly putting my stash together, and it is very overwhelming! Definitely check out the CD board.

I am planning on doing mostly prefolds for NB, and then I can reuse them as inserts and burp cloths in later stages.

Check out the FAQ on the cloth diaper board ;-)

    This.

I would also look into geting a trail pack from https://www.diaperjunction.com/try-cloth-diapers.html or https://jilliansdrawers.com/products/clothdiapers/tryclothfor10/tryclothfor10 .

Since not all daip like all babys ers are the sameare not the same!

  • When I started cloth diapering with my first, I did it for very cheap.  I had about two dozen prefolds and 6-8 diaper covers.  I would rinse my dirty covers off and hang them to dry after each use so they could be reused more quickly.  I used diaper pins and had about 2 dozen flannel cloth wipes.  Instead of a diaper pail I used a regular trash can with a lid.

My initial investment was minimal and as long as I did one load of diapers every day or day and a half I had plenty.

It wasn't until my second son was 6 months old that I discovered pocket diapers. I will say they are much easier to use, but if cost is a factor or you seem overwhelmed with all of the choices out there, prefolds and covers are very doable and affordable.

  • I agree with the others and you should definitely check out the CD board. As far as being grossed out-the baby is going to have blowouts in disposables, most likely.  That means you get the poop all over the clothes :-)  I am easily grossed out, but baby poop isn't a big deal.  And when the cloth diaper actually confines the big piles of liquid poop, it will make a big difference!  Also, we don't really use cloth wipes.  For whatever reason I just find them to be more of a pain than disposable (though far less eco-friendly).  If you aren't sure, you could always try a diaper trial from a place like Jillian's Drawers.
  • Definitely go lurk around on the Cloth Diaper board - tons of helpful info there all the time.

For newborn stage I had 28 prefolds and 3 or 4 covers. I later increased my covers stash because I wanted to be lazy and do less laundry. =) I washed every 3-4 days this way.

Once my daughter was big enough (around 3 months - she was a peanut) I switched over to BumGenius 3.0 One Size Pockets. I had 20something of them, but now I have WAY more because I am going to have 2 in diapers in a few months. All of my BGs came with a newborn insert and a bigger doubler.

I made about 30 something cloth wipes out of some flannel or hand me down receiving blankets on one side and my husband's old undershirts on the other.

My covers were Thirsties brand and I LOVE THEM. LOVE. Will not use anything else.
