Intro & weight gain ? (Dr Luke)

Hi ladies - I'm 9 weeks pregnant with twins and wanted to introduce myself. We got pregnant with our FET cycle. So it's been a bit of a long road to get here and we're extatic! We're in our mid-late 30's and have been married for over 5 years. No furbabies and no other children.

My question: A friend recomended Dr Luke's book to me and I've been reading alot about her weight gain suggestions early on in pregnancy. Is that what many of you have followed? How did you do it? As hungry as I am, I can't seem to put on any weight. I'm trying to eat healthy and mostly crave fruit. You all know the crazy appetite you get!

Just wondering if anyone had any advice or other books to read? Thanks!!

Re: Intro & weight gain ? (Dr Luke)

  • Congrats!! I'm another SAIF'er here - love when I see more of us here - makes me happy! :)

I followed Dr. Luke's recommendations on weight gain... I TRIED to gain 24lbs in 24w, but only gained 19, even though i ate like crazy- the babies just used up the energy. Eating lots of dairy and protein is most important - and just trying to gain - but don't stress too much about it if the weight doesn't come on- as long as you are eating a lot and the right things (healthy, protein, dairy) it will be fine.  I don't know anyone who has actually followed her "diet" b/c it's insane! But the basics are quite wise.

I also followed her rec's on taking it easy... sitting every chance you get... leaving work early (i left at 27w with no complications) and seeing an MFM as well as an OB.

I had a fantastic twin pg - with no complications and made it to my scheduled c/s at 38w1d with no signs of labor..... all came as a shock to me AND my OB b/c my first pg had tons of issues (kidney stones, high blood pressure/Pre-E, PTL at 32w, and I was induced at 36w b/c of it).

my twins were 7lb 15.6oz and 6lb 6oz - came right home with me. So i'm a HUGE Dr. Luke supporter. Sure some of it is luck- but i figured i had one chance to grow these babies and i wanted to do everything i could to get as far as i could.

congrats again- here's to a healthy and happy pregnancy!!!

  • There is no way you can eat what she says you should.  I only gained 12 lbs with my twin pregnancy and they were fine.  I did have to follow the GD diet for several months so, that did keep the weight down for me.

  • I did not have the book. I too had problems gaining weight, I ate healthy and alot but only gained 24 1/2 lbs. I think they were taking the fat off me and gaining it for themselves, as I came home from hospital 8 lbs lighter than before I had them.

They were born at 37weeks 4 days scheduled csection 6lbs 11oz and 5lbs, no issues at all.

Congrats and Good Luck with Everything!!

  • Congratulations!!

I never read her book, and never followed her guidelines.  I ate when I was hungry, and tried to keep it as healthy as possible.

  • I read like Dr. Luke's book - although it would be next to impossible follow all of her guidelines.

At this point, I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain. I struggled to put on weight until about 4 weeks ago, but the babies are measuring right on track, if not a bit ahead.  Just keep eating and the pounds will come on when they are supposed to.

My only advice is to enjoy every minute! The time goes by so quickly, I feel like we just had our 7w4d u/s and found out it was twins, now I can't believe I only have 15 weeks to go!

  • I read Dr. Luke's book and loosely follow her guidelines. I did gain 20 lbs in 20 weeks. I just make sure to eat as much protein and calcium as possible.

  • Congrats and welcome Kmart. I had the Dr Luke book, read a bit of it, then sold it on half.com, I personally did not like it. I gained 34lbs. My babies were born at 36 weeks 5 days, they weighed 5lbs and 5lbs 13 oz, no nicu time needed. I had an amazing pregnancy with no problems.  I ate lots of protein, fruit, got lots of calcium, drank chocolate ensure shakes. My OB was never concerned about my weight gain. I am 5 '7 went up to 174 and 10 days after my section I was down to 140 and now I am down to 132.  I chose not to breastfeed and was pleasantly surprised with my weight loss. Your main goal is to nourish these babies the best you can. Don't get stressed out about what a book tells you, have your OB be your guide.

This is what I did, too.  Like Goldie, I also left work early (although I think I quit around 32 weeks maybe...can't remember exactly) and took the advice of "don't stand when you can sit" to heart.

I had zero complications and made it to my scheduled c-section at 37w 1d.  Babies were 6lbs 5oz (DS) and 4lbs 5.15 oz (DD).  I suspect DD's small size is as much a function of me being relatively petite and her being my mini-me more than anything else.

All I can say is to make your calories count and be healthy.  I had a phase where I ate a lot of junk and I'm paying for it now, with 15lbs that I just can't lose.

  • I didn't find out I was having twins until 12 weeks, and since then I've been trying really hard to gain weight (I had only gained 2 pounds at that point).  I don't eat red/"white" meat, only poultry and fish, so following Dr. Luke's diet is next to impossible for me.  I have way-upped my dairy intake and I'm trying to eat as much protein as possible, but what I crave are fruits and vegetables.  Talk to your doctor about Dr. Luke--some love her and some don't.  I think it's good to read it so you at least have the information, but ultimately you and your own doc will have to decide what's best for you and your babies.
  • Thank you so much ladies! It really helps to put things in perspective hearing what you have done - I was shocked at the amount of food she wants you to eat and some of the suggestions. I think I just need to get off this carb kick I'm on and get some better stuff in me and we'll be fine.

I hope to see the OB in a few weeks and I'll see what they have to say - I just want to be informed and do whatever I can.

  • hey k-mart :) So glad to see you dipping your toes into the water over here!

I actually liked Mothering Multiples a lot better than the Dr. Luke book. I found it to be just as informative without all of the crazy diet stuff.

Pre-pregnancy I used food scales and such for portion/calorie control, so when I found out I was pregnant I stopped weighing and measuring my food and just ate what sounded good and when I was hungry.

At my last OB visit (yesterday) I was up a total of 46 pounds.

Your body knows what to do and will tell you what it wants to eat and when. I've had weird kicks where all I want to eat is yogurt and I'll eat 5 yogurts a day, or all I want is fruit and a meal will end up being two oranges, an apple and some pineapple. It's strange. But seems to have worked for me.

    GL hon!
