Bacon, lunch meat and hot dogs...

Has anyone been eating these foods throughout their pregnancy?  I eat lunch meat about 1-2x per week as I do bacon.  I don't even reheat the lunch meat, however, I don't eat the cheap stuff as we usually buy Boars Head.  I have yet to have a hot dog but my grandmother sent us a package from Omaha Steaks that had franks in eat DH and I were thinking about have one for lunch?  For some reason I am more nervous about eating the hot dog even though it will be steaming hot.  Thoughts anyone?

  • I've not had any deli meat but I have had a couple of hot dogs - just made sure they were super hot before eating.

  • I have a hot dog probably once a week. I eat bacon too. My Dr. never said anything about not eating these.

  • Never heard of the bacon thing!

I don't eat these things a lot, but I do eat them. My OB said all is okay in moderation, and just don't be stupid - ie eating sandwiches that have been sitting out for awhile, etc. I'll have a sandwich that I either prepared or I watched someone make, but not the ones that sit out for us at work events.

    STM due Feb. 2017!
  • I have not heard about the bacon either.

I eat lunch meat and I don't steam it first. Honestly, when I had dd 4 years ago, I had never heard of any of this stuff. I ate all the stuff while pregnant with her and she is just fine.

I don't care for hot dogs so I don't eat them very often. But if I had a craving for one, I wouldn't think twice about going to fix one.

You can get the listeria from anything! You can get it from ICE CREAM! It is silly that they restrict certain foods more than others.

  • It would be a crime against humanity to take my bacon and hot dogs away. I have also enjoyed toasted subs from subway and two cold turkey sandwiches. I have no guilt.

Yes  Hmm....I eat all these things, I love a yummy BLT and might just have one for lunch.

  • The issue with bacon has more to do with the nitrates and other preservatives.  Nitrates are found in most processed meats, including deli meat and hot dogs, and have been proven to be carcinogenic in animals.  There is significant emerging research that shows the same for humans.

I eat nitrate free turkey bacon every day, sometimes twice a day.  I've also eaten nitrate free deli meat a few times, but I do heat it until steaming.  My SIL had a still birth due to listeria, so I'm not one to think of it only as an "urban legend" as many on here do.  It just hits too close to home.

Yes  Hmm....I eat all these things, I love a yummy BLT and might just have one for lunch. I even made yummy bratwurst the other night with sauteed onion and peppers with spicy mustard.

  • Thanks ladies! I just ate my hot dog and it was delicious! :)

  • Heated bacon and hot dogs are fine in moderation. Lunch meat however, is not (unless it is heated). Pregnant women are 20 times more likely than other adults to contract Listeriosis.

    https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/listeria.html

"If you are pregnant and are infected with listeriosis, you could experience:

    • Miscarriage
    • Premature delivery
    • Infection to the newborn
    • Death to the newborn (about 22% of cases of perinatal listeriosis result in stillbirth or neonatal death) "

A friend of mine craved Italian hoagies when she was pregnant. She lost her son at 19 weeks due to Listeria. So I guess it may not be that common and I'm sure women have eaten lunch meat and nothing has ever happened but for me it's not worth the risks. Better brands have nothing to do with it...

  • I've had all of them and I don't heat my lunch meat. I'm more cautious about where it comes from while I'm pregnant, that's all. Basically, staying away from street vendors since I can't be sure of the conditions it's kept in.

  • I've eaten all those things during this pregnancy and the last.  I don't heat the lunchmeat either.  Gasp!

  • When my weight gain was a huge concern my doctor said to eat more bacon! I have lunch meat every once in a while (sometimes I really need a hot ham and cheese sandwich), same with hot dogs, although I'm not a huge fan. I just do it in moderation.

  • i dont like hot dogs and some weird pregnancy aversion has me hating bacon which i am sad about it. i eat turkey sandwiches on occasion.
  • The only reason you can't eat these is because of the bacteria that causes listeriosis.  This bacteria disappears when you heat the meat to over 140 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you're worried about it, just heat it up!  I eat this stuff all the time, I just heat it up first.  You should be fine :)

  • I thought the issue with hot dogs and bacon was the nitrates in them, not risk of listeria? I've had bacon a couple of times and a few sausages (I hate hot dogs). I don't eat them a lot - but I think if you are craving one then go for it.

  • I've had lunch meat and hotdogs.  But I only eat sandwiches from places I've been to before and feel safe that they are clean.

  • Boil or cook the hot dog.  You will be fine.  I've had a hot dog or two and bacon.  I always buy the nitrate free versions, but I'm sure the bacon I had at my mil's was not nitrate free.  You really only need to be concerned about listeria, and if you cook the meat, you should have no problems.

  • I have eaten all!  I asked my Dr about it in the beginning and she practically rolled her eyes and said they were fine.  FWIW, I do buy nitrate free, but I always have.

  • I dont really eat lunchmeat or hotdogs but I LOVE bacon.  I dont eat it often (maybe 1-3 times a month) but not the other stuff.  But thats just because I dont like it not beause I think its a health risk.

  • Never heard of the bacon thing. Hmmm

I have had two sausage dogs throughout the pregnancy but no lunch meat (just because I despise sandwiches). I think you'll be totally fine. I think hot dogs are an "in moderation" issue to me.

  • I just got done eating all three! For New years our appetizer spread includes mini weenies in bbq sauce, potato skins that I chocked full of bacon n cheese and a cheese/lunchmeat tray that I put together today. The only thing not heated is the lunchmeat on the snack tray but I got it sliced today so I'm not too worried about it.
  •   I am very sensitive to chemicals so I always eat nitrate/trite free and as natural or organic as possible- with these guidelines I have had plenty of bacon and proscuitto,(obviously steaming hot), I had honey baked ham for Christmas (heated and then a soup made witht he bones)- I don't know if that counts as sandwich meat, I don't eat hot dogs or sandwich meat as a rule so it hasn't come up.

  • I have a sandwich addiction, so I've literally been eating lunch meat 2-3 times a day. However, I do buy a better brand and heat it up in the microwave every time. But I've also had the occasional hot dog and bacon. I really wouldn't worry. Just be smart. As long as it hasn't sat out for long, smell bad, or look funny I don't think there's much risk. My ob never even said anything about not eating any of it.

  • My ob/gyn told me not to eat hot dogs or lunchmeat unless they are heated until steaming.  They gave listeria as the reason because infections of this bacteria can kill fetuses. I try to heat my lunchmeats first on a griddle and then do a grilled cheese type sandwich with them. I've slipped twice when I was away from home and craving it thinking "what are the chances?", but the previous poster's comment about her sister-in-law's miscarriage is a stern reminder of what's at stake so I won't be doing that again.  I'd seriously regret that sandwich if I knew that that's what killed my baby.
  • Hot dogs and lunch meat have been my favorite through my whole pregnancy, yumm. My nutritionist told me it really isn't a big deal as long as the meats are heated/re-cooked or you are confident the meats were cut with a clean blade. Hope that helps
  • Yes Yes Yes...I've had them all. Yum!
