If you don't drive a minivan...

Hey ladies, I know the car question is asked a lot on here, and the traditional advice is "get a minivan!"  However, I'm leaving my job to SAH for at least a year, we're moving to a bigger apartment with higher rent, and I'm not sure that a newer minivan is in our budget right now.  Are there other cars or smaller SUVs that people have found to work well with twins?  We're not planning on having any more children, but we'll still probably upgrade to a minivan when the twins get a little older.  I'm just trying to see if there's a more affordable option that will work in the meantime.  Thanks for any advice!

  • I have a gmc Acadia. It works well for me for now. Mine has the captains chairs in the middle which is where I have both of the carseats. My 3rd row is almost always laid down so the double stroller can fit. I want more room n hopefully will try for 1 more, so when my lease is up I definitely will upgrade to a Suburban or Yukon XL. • I purchased a used/demo '08 VW Passat wagon back in '09.  It's not ideal, but it works and I have to make it work.  With 3, a minivan is definitely in my future, but i'm a SAHM now so it'll have to wait a while.

  • I still vote for a minivan...older ones work well too. :-)  We have a 2002(?) Odyssey and it still has the things that make life easier for twin parents, like automatic sliding doors, space, the ability to climb from the front seat to the back without too much trouble, and the ability to carry more than 2 adults.

  • Yeah, my vote is for a used mini van too.... esp since you seem to have no issues with minivans in general (wanting to upgrade later).

That being said, SIL has two kids (not twins) and makes do with her Acadia.  But that doesn't fit in  your "cars or smaller SUVs" catagory since that thing is huge.  MIL picks up my boys in her CRV and it works, so maybe one of those?

Although if you are looking to get a new CRV, I'm not sure if it's that much more to get the Odyssey.

BTW - we have the Odyssey and we love it.  It's big and when I don't have the kids, I much prefer taking my 12 year old Maxima, but it's so so so awesome with the twins.

  • We drive a Honda Accord with the girls and it has been fine. We did have to take trunk space into consideration when purchasing a double stroller, but found one that still allows me to have room for groceries, etc. At this point we're in no rush to upgrade to a minivan or SUV.  The backseat has been plenty roomy for the RF carseats and DH to be able to fit comfortably in the drivers seat (he's 6'2").

  • I have a 2011 Sienna, so I'm no help, but my friend has twins and has a CRV and then another friend has an Altima and they both have plenty of room.  We also have an Altima and the trunk space is amazing!

This exactly!  My Accord works just fine.  My DH is 6'4" so it's a little tight, but the Accord is mine, and the boys ride with me most of the time.

  • I have an 07 Camry. I love it. We had a smaller SUV- Jeep Compass but it was too small. We traded it for the Camry and holy wow. Much better.

  • If we only had the twins our CRV or the jeep patriot would have been fine. The CRV especially. Because we have 3 kids we got a used pilot.

  • We have an 08 Honda Pilot (bought used this year) and we love it.  The third row is always folded down so far, but the DSNG does fit when it's up.  We tend to keep cars for around 10 years, so we figure if we go for #3, we may as well have the third row option.  Also it'll be nice for bringing family with us places and not having to take 2 cars.

  • I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox my DH works at a Chevy dealer so we had to get one and that was the one we could afford.

It only fits the 2 car seat bases in back seat but the seat does slide forward and back making room in back for double stroller. My groceries still fit in back with stroller. Although I could not fit Costco purchases in it with Stroller.

I was orginally gonna get a used Mini Van but we decided we should go for New and Chevy does not make a Mini Van. I had a 2 door sunfire so that was not gonna work.

  • We have a Jeep Commander and a Honda Fit.  The Commander is great when we are going somewhere where we need to lug a lot of baby gear, but the Fit is fine for the twins and with the hatchback I can even fit our BOB.

  • I have a 2004 Nissan Altima.  So far, we have had no problems. Just a few weeks ago, we the whole family in the car with the DSNG and the City Mini Double in the trunk.  When the day was done, we went to the grocery store, a target trip and a christmas tree on the roof!  No mini van or SUV required :)  Now my husband's Jetta, that's another story.

  • Check out Mazda.  They have a small minivan for a smaller pricetag.

  • We have an acura mdx & it is totally fine for us. only problem is that the backseat is not too big so rear facing infant & convertible seats caused some issues for MH driving (he is only 6' and was still super uncomfortable) so I advise checking that out on any car since you generally will put the twins on either side of the car.

Storage wise we just drove to PA for 11 days with a ton of crap in the back of it (we had to ship most of hte gifts home but we wouldve had to do that w/ a minivan too)

Our next car will be one of the larger SUVs with the captain chair middle row option.  I just can't get on board w/ the minivan even though everyone swears by them....
