If they honestly don't have a single word by 18 months, I think most pedi's will recommend an evaluation. But I think a lot depends on other behaviors, too, like are they babbling a lot, do they understand what is said to them, etc.
most toddlers begin saying words around 18 months, some will have a few words, and some less. IF a child is not talking at all or making gestures between 18-22 months that would be cause for concern.
O doesn't say a word. Not one. As a mom, I want him to talk. My unlicensed professional opinion (speech pathology, will graduate in August, wooooo!!) is that he is communicating in other ways and developing normally otherwise, so I'm just watching him. If he has no words at 2, I'll have him evaluated.
