Alabama Babies

Medicaid

Is anyone here on Alabama Medicaid? My husband and I are possibly moving to AL in the next few weeks. We are concerned his new job's insurance will not cover me since I am already pregnant. We are going to look into Medicaid to cover my prenatal apts until the baby is born, then be picked up by the company's ins. I'm just trying to find out the regulations for Medicaid and see if anyone knows what the income limit is. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Re: Medicaid

  • Hi, I'm not sure of Medicaid but I did want to add that according to both VIVA and United Healthcare, pregnancy was not considered a "pre-existing condition" (pregnancy isn't an illness or complication).

I got married and changed insurance to my DH's during my first trimester without an issue. But we did call both insurance companies to double-check first (DH's company is currently with one but preparing to switch companies after the 1st of the year).

Also, you could always call into the insurance company as a general question- they don't need any identifying information to answer whether pregnancy would be covered. Just tell them your husband is the primary. That's how we had peace of mind before the change =)

  • Sorry, just as an update, I found this online:

Pregnancy complicates health insurance options. Federal law bars pregnancy from being considered a preexisting condition, which means if you change health plans while you're pregnant, your new insurer can't deny claims related to your pregnancy. But a variety of loopholes means pregnant women could still lack insurance coverage for their prenatal care if they don't do some careful planning.

Under a law known as HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, health insurers cannot consider pregnancy a preexisting condition. So, unlike illnesses such as diabetes, they can't deny you coverage when you go from one job to another and switch health plans.

If you're currently insured, you shouldn't have an issue with your husband's group plan. There are exceptions though re: HIPAA ; I'd call the insurance company directly to find out what you'd need to do to make sure your prenatal care is covered.

  • I will be on Medicaid sometime next month. I just finally won my disability hearing that has been going on for almost 3 years now. So I don't know just yet but will soon and I will let you know then.
  • Thanks so much for the info and website.

  • You should look into Alabama's WIC program. I'm not sure of the qualifications; however, my former roomie was on it and it covered her prenatal visits and even some food!  Good Luck.
  • Pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition so you should be fine, especially if you already have coverage under your existing plan.

However what's most important is that your husband's new insurance has maternity coverage. Most companies provide for it but some smaller ones do not.

  • I think you'll probably be fine, but I'll just throw this out there.  If something happens and you don't have insurance or Medicaid, many doctors have reasonable out-of-pocket payment plans.  If you let them know upfront, they will probably be willing to work with you.

  • If you have BC/BS, pregnancy isn't a pre-existing condition for them, either. At least according to the insurance packet they gave me when I started a new job in August.
