Trying to Get Pregnant

Update on DH's surgery today

Well, DH had his shunt removed today. They actually sent him home only a couple of hours after his surgery, which I'm pretty pissed about. I have NEVER seen DH cry, and he's in the living room crying right now, because he's in so much pain.

The surgeon never came to talk to me (or even try to find me) after DH's surgery was finished. I was told that 20 minutes after he was finished, the surgeon was downstairs eating lunch! I was waiting for 3 hours, until I finally went to the nurse's station, and demanded to know something...anything about DH! It was only after I pitched a huge fit, that they finally let me go back and see him!

Then, I told them that DH would need some pain medicine, since they were discharging him tonight, and they told me that I would have to get it from their private pharmacy. Their pharmacy doesn't cover BCBS, so I told them that they needed to transfer it to CVS, and they told me that they couldn't do that!

Now, I'm waiting on the doctor to call me back. I'm thoroughly pissed off, and I'm seriously about to have words with this man! I've been advised to file a grievance with the insurance company because of all that happened today.

Just thought I'd give you ladies an update. How did everyone else' day go? Hopefully it was better than mine. Angry

  • Your poor husband. I am sorry to hear how it was handled. Is this a VP shunt? Did a neurosurgeon do it I assume? I have always had the MD or at least waiting room staff tell the pt's family how things went.

Did he end up getting pain meds yet?

Yes, it was a VP shunt removal. A neurosurgeon did perform the surgery. I'm severely disappointed in his bedside manner. I'm currently waiting on his surgeon to call me back about the meds. He needs them, and I need to go get them.

I don't think he'll call back though. It took 5 times for the hospital to page him, to get him to return their call.

  • I can't imagine discharging someone w/o a script for narcotics after a surgical procedure. I hope you get some answers. I would keep calling, that is unacceptable.

  • Gosh I'm sorry to hear this! That's just awful!! How can they release him with no pain meds after surgery??? I'd be livid! I'm able to relate because MH also had major surgery this past summer and it was really hard to see him in pain and not be able to do anything (although he did have his pain meds)

But it's a good thing that you're there with him to be his advocate and make sure that the doctor is not slacking. Good for you! GL with the recovery!

  • I work at a local hospital in my area, and oftentimes I am VERY disappointed in the bedside manner of some of our doctors and nurses.

It seems that after years of working in a hospital setting, they lose their compassion.  Everyone, to them, is just whiny and needy, and they honestly could care less about the pain.  A patient will call for something, and I will watch some of the nurses sit around and finish whatever they are doing on facebook before they get up and get what the patient needs.  It infuriates me.  As a PCT, I don't have much power to get anything done around there as far as medicine is concerned.

I am going to apply for nursing school in about a year and a half, and I have a list of things I will NOT do as a nurse.  It is pretty ridiculous.

Definitely file a grievance.  This sounds like it is a terrible situation for him that has caused unnecessary pain.

    T&P's being sent your way.

  • Your H is SO lucky to have such a caring wife as an advocate!  Good for you for keeping on top of the doctors and level of care he received.

When DH had surgery a few years ago, I found that the stereotype of "stone cold surgeons" is pretty true.  I imagine that in order to open someone up to help them, one would have to detach themselves from feelings for the patient.  Even still, what they did to your H is unacceptable!!!  GL!!!

  • What a nightmare!  I'm sorry your DH is in pain, and that you are dealing with all of this.  Hope he recovers soon!
