If you've vacationed with a toddler and >1 year old...

Found some great deals and may go on vacation (possibly Disney) in March or April (I know....busy times but the deals are great!).  DS #1 will have just turned 3 and #2 will be 6-7 months.  Wondering how hard it would be to travel with the baby at that age.  Any advice?

  • We went to Disney when DS was about 8 months.  It was fine.  He could go on all the rides I can go on.  I just wore him in an ergo.

DD had a ball.  There is no vacation for mom,  but just be prepared for that.

You and DS didnt get too hot wearing him all the time?  What did you do about feeding?  Buy the jarred food and take it with or buy it there?  We did Tampa with DS #1 before #2 was born so I understand how its not very relaxing for mom and dad but seeing him have SO much fun was well worth it.

  • We did a week-long lake vacation when our boys were 2.5 years and 6.5 months.  It wasn't too bad since DS2 wasn't really very mobile yet and DS1 had lots of fun.  We did the same trip this past year and it was exponentially more exhausting.  DS2 was all over the place and DS1 thought he was way bigger/more independent than he really is.
  • My biggest advice is to watch for meal times when going to restaurants because kids get tired and cranky easily on vacation and if you go to the restaurant at their normal meal time and you have to wait for your meal to come they will be eating late, sometimes very late.  When we went away with our kids 2y10m and 10m we had one dinner with both kids asleep on our laps with no dinner, it was a disaster b/c we got their too late for the kids tolerance.

  • I think traveling with a baby is so easy.  I never did babyfood with mine.  They just ate whatever I was eating (within reason obviously) and I was nursing.

I wore both my kids all the time.  I was not hot.  It can actually be pretty cold at Disney in March, but I never really had a problem with getting to hot in the ergo even in the summer, just wear a thin shirt and put the baby in shorts and a t-shirt.  You are in line a lot and you cannot have a stroller in line, so you will otherwise end up holding the baby for hours, at least in the ergo, they can sleep and my arms won't fall off.

I would just take in baby food, though my DS never ate baby food, I did take things he would eat.  I also take in snacks and water for DD.    I take in milk for both of them because they do not get regular milk.  Disney is super nice about that stuff.  They have never said a word to me about it in the 3 times I have been there.
