3rd Trimester

Inducing Labor At home

I have 13 days left for my due date, but I want her to come now. Im becoming impatient because I cant get any sleep, body aches, constipated, and tired. I havent experienced these things through the pregnancy except for being tired. Do you think that its ok to try to get her to come? My doctor said my cervix is very soft, but im only dilated to 2cm. What are some natural ways to induce labor, safely?

Re: Inducing Labor At home

  • I'm trying to avoid being induced, so my doctor suggested lots of sex and nipple stimulation.  It's very uncomfortable and little painful ( i start having cramps) for us to have sex, but we've managed to do it twice in the last week.  Idk if it's made a difference or not.  Good Luck.

  • I just went through a huge list of these for a friend who is due tomorrow and ready for her LO to get here already!  The list we found included:

eating pineapple - Told her this one a couple weeks ago and she was dialated 2cm and effaced 50% the next day.

having sex - she's too uncomfortable

castor oil - her OB actually recommended this one!

Eating Eggplant Parm - couldn't figure this one out

    Walking, walking, walking

  • No, it's not recommended to try to induce labor at 38 weeks. Many babies are not ready to come at 38 weeks, and if you do something stupid to bring on contractions it can be bad for both you and baby. Most induction techniques are not going to work if baby is not ready anyway, so you're just wasting your time.

When you got pregnant, you signed up for body aches, being tired, and constipated. Suck it up. If you were well past your EDD and trying to avoid an induction, I'd be willing to give you tips, but not at 38 weeks when your baby very well may not be ready to be born.

I agree.  Honestly, if strong symptoms and PG misery is new to you--count yourself lucky! I don't mean that in a trite way. Really, from what you posted it sounds like you have had a very easy pregnancy. How very fortunate for you! Relish in that and just let your LO come in his/her own time. Let him get bigger and stronger and more developed. The more developed the brain, the easier things will be when baby is out. This process really is about your baby's health--not your comfort.

Also, 1st time babies are more likely to come at 41 weeks than before, so you may want to mentally prepare yourself for that timeline. "Due date" is pretty arbitrary.

I agree with both pps. I had my induction at 37 weeks with my son. I was in early labor at 32 and 35 weeks with him. My OB said if I could hold out till 37 weeks she'd induce me. What a fvck up I made during the decision. When my son had to be cut out of me during an emergency c-section since my cervix wouldn't dilate and I was listed failure to progress...I learned my son was born dying. He had enough surfactant to cry and began to deteriorate rapidly after that. He was rushed out of the room, I could not hold him, he was immediately taken to a Level II NICU room where IV's were put in his stomach and he was paralyzed by sedation. He was then transferred to Texas Children's Hospital for the next 3 weeks where I was told by a team of specialists that he wasn't meant to make it and which funeral home did I have in mind.

Connor did survive and is 9 years old now. I would NEVER agree to another induction or trying to get the baby out because I was uncomfortable ever again. It is hell watching your newborn suffer for the decision you made because you were achy and tired of being pregnant.

I will retierate what the other bumpies said...Suck it up. Pregnancy isn't about our comfort. It's about our willingness to give up our bodies to nurture our children. If that means we are achy, throwing up, tired, sore, cranky, swollen, bruised...so what. I'll glad suffer so my baby has the best opportunity when he/she is born. You have less than 2 weeks. Don't risk it now.

Are you serious? Pregnancy is uncomfortable?! ::Gasp:: sorry I can't say that it's safe to induce labor. Your baby will come when she is ready. Best thing for you is to walk. Until you hit 39/40 weeks there's no reason to rush things.

  • No matter what you try at home, the baby will not come if she/ your body are not ready. Nipple stimulation can be dangerous- you could overstimulate your uterus. Sorry you're uncomfortable but seriously, suck it up and be thankful you've had an easy pregnancy.

  • Ive been induced twice now by the doctors and both times it failed. Now i am 4 days overdue and realized the baby wont come until its ready.. Just gotta hang in there..
  • I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you think you're going to get any more sleep after the baby comes, think again.

Anything you try at home will not work unless you're about to go into labor anyway, you can always try the usual sex, lots of walking, caster oil (which I do not recommend unless you like diarrhea), etc. Baby WILL come, just try to be patient and enjoy these last few days/weeks of just you and your S/O.

  • Oh my! If you can't be patient for 13 more days, I hate to see what you look like after baby comes. You are tired, cranky, and it is 3am and baby is screaming his head off! I don't think you would handle that well either...

SUCK IT UP! Do you think the rest of us have it sooo easy? Nope, guess again. Leave your baby alone! If your doctor wanted to induce you, then you would be in a hospital doing just that! Not at home trying unsafe remedies you heard of online.

  • IMO - Just wait it out. LO will come when they are ready and the more womb time they get the better. It's not forever and it'll be over soon! Maybe try getting a massage to relax your body?
