Re: CB, a Nikon lens question

  • I'm going to be lurking in this thread too :) I don't really need it for anything other than taking pics of the boys, mostly inside and sometimes outside.

  • Robin, do you know how long this Amazon deal is good?
  • out of those to pick from, i would go with

    $300 off Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor wide-angle zoom lens.

buuut if i were you, i would seriously consider just buying the body and getting a 50mm ....i have a 28-80mm kit lens and the 50mm is on my body 95% of the time

(edit cause i changed my mind:)

Is this a good price for this body?

And I found the 50 mm for $130

  • Okay.  Here's the thing about Nikon's entry level cameras.

They don't have auto focus motors in the body.  Which means you have to buy lenses that have the motor built in the lens itsself or you must always manual focus.  And really, I don't even like manual focusing when I have to sometimes.  I would never buy a lens knowing that's what I was going to have to do especially with 2 mobile infants who will soon be walking, running, playing toddlers.

So, having said that you need to look at lenses that say AF-S (or if you're looking at a Sigma lens, look for HSM).  You will absolutely HATE the 50mm you found for $130 so don't even waste your money on it.

Not to mention even if you did drop the $450 on the 50mm f/1.4 that autofocuses on the 3100, yes you'll get great pictures but if you have a small house you are going to feel very limited by the focal length of the lens.

In your situation, I would most likely get the 3100 body and a 35mm f/1.8.  But wait a few days to buy the 35mm because amazon is out of stock and they are using another seller whose price is a little too high.  They get them back in stock early next week and amazon will sell them at this link.

I would recommend the 24-70 f/2.8 like froot did but I highly doubt you're wanting to spend $1200 on a lens even after the $300 discount.

Don't let the autofocus motor thing deter you from Nikon.  I have never felt restricted in my lens options just because I have to look at AF-S choices.  For what you will be using the camera for, an entry level Nikon is perfect.

  • I agree with CB and would recommend going with the 35mm instead of the 50mm.

Also, compare the D3000 with the D3100.  The D3100 just came out to replace the D3000 so there may be some nicer features that would make spending a little more money worth it.
