breathable bumper??

We received a bedding set that includes a nice thick bumper- is it recommended to use breathable bumpers until the baby can roll over and then put the thicker one in the crib? What are you all doing?

Actually, it's when they're able to roll over that the bumpers pose the biggest suffocation risk (or so I've heard).

We aren't doing a bumper at all. I was going to do the breathable one, but I'm just going to start with none. A lot of people still use the regular bumpers, but they really aren't recommended because of SIDS. We will have nothing in the crib.

The first time around we used the the bumpers that came with the bedding until she could roll over and then we switched to the breathable. This time we are just going with the breathable from the get-go.

We used the breathable bumper with DS and we plan to use one with the new baby also. DS used to sleep with his face RIGHT UP TO the bumper, it used to scare the crap out of me!! So needless to say, I am glad we used the breathable bumper!

I had a cute fluffy bumper for DD but, after attending a child care class and hearing about the SIDS risk that bumpers pose, I promptly returned the bumper and bought a breathable. I'll use a breathable with #2, as well.

Breathable bumpers are recommended to help with the SIDS risk. Regular bumpers are dangerous even before the baby can roll over because it restricts the air flow at the baby's level which can lead to the baby not getting enough oxygen. Personally, I'm using the breathable bumpers and then I'm turning the regular bumpers into pillows to put on the chair in the nursery.

We're not using any sort of bumper until getting caught in the rails is a problem--if is ever becomes one. It just isn't worth the risk to me.

For DD, I used a breathable bumper once she started poking arms and legs through the crib. For DS, I will just put the breathable one up from the start. Only because I have it on-hand. I second the idea of turning the cute fluffy bumper into a room decoration, either some pillows or you can tie the ties to a wooded rod and display it in the baby's room.

We have a bumper in the crib right now just for looks, but after LO is done in the bassinet, we will take out the bumper and he will sleep in the crib. DH was concerned about the lining in the bassinet, but there are mesh pockets for that reason, and he should only be in there for a few months.

I never purchased a breathable bumper because DD slept in the PNP in my room until she was 6 months old. After that, I put her in the crib without a bumper, but she kept banging her head on the rails, so I had to put the bumper back in there.
