My first pg was a different story, i was super cautious about EVERYTHING. This time around will probably be a little different. Actually, i just had a yummy turkey croissant sandwich from my favorite deli. [Poll]
My doc said "in moderation" and the biggest issue is 1st tri because of the m/c risk being so much higer. I've also been told by several people you just have to heat it up and then you can eat what you want.
I said yes but I should qualify it. Last pregnancy, I heated up the meat before I ate it (with the exception of eating a couple bites at a baby shower because I didn't want to be rude). I plan to do the same thing this time by heating up the meat before eating it. It may be overkill, but it's one less thing I need to worry about... and since we're going for 2 under 2 here, there's plenty of other things I will be worrying about in the meantime!!

oh yeah congrats! I didn't realize you were pg. guess we will be rounding the boards together again!
I haven't eaten deli meat at home, because we always buy too much and leave it sitting in the fridge for a long time! lol But on a few occasions I've eaten it from deli restaurants, because I know it's fresh, so it's less likely to have a large amt of bacteria.

I eat deli meat as much as I did pre-pregnancy, which is still in moderation. The nitrates are not great for you anyway, so I do my best not to eat it too regularly.
When I'm at home, I heat it up, but otherwise, not so much. My dr. is pretty relaxed, she said heating is good, but don't freak out if I can't. She said she rarely sees cases of listeria from deli meat. Unfortunately, she's not willing to budge on the "no raw sushi" bit.

Yeah, I have turkey every now and then, but I only buy the good, non processed stuff (not because im paranoid, i'm just super picky). I would never eat bologna just because the thought makes me want to gag. If I liked it, i would eat it though.
I say if its fresh and from a reputable place then eat away. I just wouldnt eat it if it came from Mike's Tire shop and Deli and had flies in the case where the meat is held.

Yes I do. And I've never met anyone IRL that avoids pregnant either. It's only a bump thing to me.
I asked my dr. this and he said as long as I didn't buy it out of a trunk of a car I'm fine. He has a sense of humor.
That and don't do bologna and the really processed stuff. Fresh ham, roast beef, turkey are my usuals. Ham is the one thing that I can keep down and baby seems to like lately.
First pregnancy: no deli meat, no hot dogs, not even salads.
This pregnancy: deli sandwiches about once a week, a hot dog today, salad yesterday.
I got lucky the first time around and didn't get called into lunch meetings. This time- daily lunch meetings where lunch is deli sandwiches, hot dogs or salads. I'm keeping my secret, so I'm eating the food. So far, everything is okay.

My doctor said no so I'm not unless it's heated. I went through a stage of eating hot ham and Swiss for 2 whole weeks. I'm sure I'm being overly cautious but I rather be overly than not as much.
I didn't eat it hardly ever before I got pregnant and have had it once so far. I have an aversion to meat anyway so the thought of it makes me nauseated
damn, i totally forgot about deli meats and had my husband get me a sandwich from subway yesterday. whoops! i was irate, too, because the entire restaurant had run out of cheese and all i wanted was some provolone! pregnancy hormones, anyone? i will be laying off the deli meats!!

Really, with deli meat it's NOT a matter of moderation because if you get listeria, it's from one piece of meat, not because you ate Subway too much. That being said, I do eat it, and I eat raw sushi as well.

This is what i was thinking. Moderation has NOTHING to do with it.
I don't like lunch meat normally -- the sliminess grosses me out -- so I won't be eating it while pregnant. I prefer to avoid nitrates anyway, so if I'm craving a sandwich I'll roast a chicken breast and slice it up.

yeah thats a tough one! BOO!!! I love sushi.
Yum that sounds delish. Do you think they make it on a clean surface (not one that they used for other raw fish)? That would be my only concern.
