Would your kid eat a sub sandwich?

DS1's birthday party is Sunday.  This is the first time we've had more than just a couple kids - he wanted to invite all his neighborhood friends.  We're having it at a community center and I was thinking a 6' sub would be the easiest.  My boys will eat that and I know the adults like it, but are subs something pretty universally liked by the preschool crowd?  I could get pizza, but we planned on doing activities first and then food/cake, so they'd be cold and they'd be something we'd have to get right before the party, whereas we could get the sub in the morning.

Re: Would your kid eat a sub sandwich?

  • My kids both eat turkey subs.  Do they get to pick out their own toppings?  If so, then I think most kids would be fine with it.

  • DS might pick the turkey and cheese out, but actually biting into a sub roll? Probably not.

  • My DD wouldn't eat it,  but she won't eat any type of sandwich.  BUT, she would pick out the meats and eat that so I'd say go for it!  Definitely easier than pizza and a lot less greasy on little fingers.

  • They would probably eat it or at least pick at it, but I don't think they would chow down.

  • Yes, dd would definitely eat a sub.  Turkey, ham, roast beef...whatever.  She's not a picky eater.

  • mine would eat it...if it looked and tasted like a chicken nugget.  but, I always make sure he eats before we go anywhere to avoid situations like that because I know he's extremely picky.

  • My guys wouldn't likely eat it *whole*.. but might pick at the bun and the cheese. As long as there were a few other things to eat though (like fruit or some cheese/crackers/veggies) they'd be fine.

It's not like the last meal they're ever going to have (we hope!)  say do what works for you! :)

  • My kids eat subs and so do a lot of their friends.  We did subs for my DD's party last year and we ordered from Subway.  They have party trays where the subs are all cut and you can get a variety of kinds.  We did some veggie, turkey, roast beef and salami I think (its been a while).

  • Michelle is beyond super picky.  She likes cheese but would not pick it out of any kind of sandwich.

  • DD would or she'd pick it apart.  DS1 would not.  I can only get him to eat, pb&j, grilled cheese and turkey and cheese without the bread.   He would not eat a sub roll.

  • Nope.  My DS won't eat lunch meat of any kind.  PB&J, pieces of chicken or steak, bacon are all good, but he's not a sandwich kid.

  • We just did this at DD's birthday & all of the kids there ate it.

  • Yes, DD would. She'd eat a plain meat and cheese sub with no toppings.

  • We had James' birthday at a farm so we brought sub sandwiches for the same reasons you listed. It was fine. We also had chips and sliced apples with dip. All of the kids ate something and none went hungry. I say go for it :-)
  • DD would. We usually will split a footlong sub from subway.

  • I just remembered that I served subs at DS2's party. So even though I knew he wouldn't love it, I still went with it. It was easy and that came first! I did have mac&cheese too, but the subs went over just fine.

  • Nope.  My kids won't eat it, but usually would not eat much beyond the cake at a party anyway, so I would not worry about it.
  • My almost 4 year old probably would, although she probably would dissect it first.
  • When we go to subway, DS1 always eats the meat out of the sub roll.  He still eats whats inside.
  • Yes.  We had subs at Carter's 2nd birthday party and he ate his entire sub at that age as well.  He's a very good eater and not picky at all.  Now he and I share a full sub and get everything on it (black olives, green peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, banana peppers, etc)  Though even if he weren't I wouldn't expect that there for sure would be food my son ate at a party if he were picky.  I say go for it.

  • My DD would probably pick off the meat and cheese and just eat it :).
  • No, but he won't eat anything!

  • Nope and most 6' subs have pretty hard bread so I would think that even kids that like sandwiches could have issues with it.

  • No but Christopher doesn't eat anything.
