Is smoked salmon considered cooked? I mean, it still looks raw and feels raw but is it actually raw? Or does whatever process that makes it smoked make it cooked enough to eat?
It's cured and smoked, I asked my doc he said it's fine and actually good in moderation. Salmon is GREAT while pregnant. There is a similar risk like in lunch meat but I've eaten that and sushi so...yeah, my doc isn't one to say no to those things.
I was wondering about the whole salmon and sushi thing myself. I love sushi but just the kind with the cooked shrimp in it. That should be safe right? I hope so cuz I sure do miss it!! And salmon as well.... i just heard that salmon, shrimp andsome others all contain mercury, which is why us pregnant ladies shouldnt have it.
I eat it fresh from the package, but if its a few days open then no. But I eat it a lot because I love it and its good for growing baby brains! I eat cooked sushi too.
They aren't the high mercury carriers, Tuna is however. And even then it's fine I think once a week. I have had smoked salmon on bagels about once a week, I don't let it sit on the drawer though.
The smoking process, cooks the salmon- very slowly... so yes it is cooked. I eat seafood, however in moderation. My doctor says once a month is okay.
Also I heard if you are eating seafood, try not to eat the same kind and from the same place very much; switch it up sometimes.
Ditto - I would just make sure that you eat it soon after you open it - I'm such a freak about bacteria when I'm pregnant. Even leftover chicken is gone after two days. Better to be safe than sorry - nobody wants to end up in the hospital!
I wondered this too..but I have eaten it several times this pregnancy but with DD I was too scared. (Almost) everything is fine in moderation is my philosophy this time around, plus salmon is good for you.
Salmon isn't eaten raw... smoking is adequate cooking
However, it is cooked and eaten cold, and has the same issues as deli meat and pate. The listeria fear. If you are staying away from deli meat, you should be staying away from smoked salmon as well, as it has the same risks.
Everyone has a different comfort level with listeria hysteria however. Me, I have eaten smoked salmon a couple times, as it just seems too darn health beneficial and delicious to pass up. But I also eat deli meat from time to time, and GASP! eggs over easy....
I was also wondering about this and asked my doctor. He said yes, smoked salmon is ok. But he told me to stay away from raw sushi, but if I can have it cooked, I can eat it.

I am glad you asked this. I was afraid to and have been hungry for smoked salmon and cream cheese on a bagel. YUM!!!! (w capers!)
I will be careful to eat it fresh from the pkg.
