post delivery sleepwear - gown or jammies?

I usually sleep in shorts & a tee - never a gown.  Thinking ahead to my post delivery hospital time - will a gown be more practical or will yoga pants/shorts be ok?

Re: post delivery sleepwear - gown or jammies?

  • Personally, I preferred the hospital gown with a long, comfy robe and slippers over it. I had a c-section and was nursing, so I had no desire to get into my pajamas at the hospital. The gown made nursing really easy, and I was so uncomfortable/exhausted that I didnt really want to change at all.

If you don't end up delivering via c-section or you're not nursing, I would think you might want your own PJs.

  • I read in a book that even if you deliver vaginally you are going to want a gown since you will be sore down there and the nurses will want to keep an eye on the bleeding. I guess I would like to hear from other people also....

This was me last December. After having a c-section, the last thing I wanted was anything on my incision. Ugh. Plus I was woken up every 2-3 hours for either monitoring of clots or taking meds. Much easier to have a gown to pull up vs having to take pj pants off.

  • A gown was better for me.  The nurses come in and check out how you're doing and you won't want to deal with pants or shorts.  I just wore a gown, robe and socks along with the hospital's mesh undies.  It just made life easier.

  • I brought along yoga pants but ended up wearing the gown the whole time because I had to have a catheter in until I left. I did get blood on the gown so it worked out fine I just didn't like the top part of it so I wore a nursing tank under it so I felt a little less naked.

  • I was in the hospital for 2 and 1/2 days after I delivered my daughter and I stayed in hospital gowns the whole time, until the day I was discharged. They are easier to deal with when you are sore and still bleeding, because the nurses do come in and check to see how the bleeding is and etc. I would say pack a pair of yoga pants or shorts just in case you would feel more comfy in them.
  • I plan to pack both and see what I prefer. Plus hospitals are usually on the cold side so I am hoping I will feel comfortable enough to wear my pajama pants.

  • I had both kids vaginally, the first day/night after they were born I was still in the gowns, the next day I did pj pants and a nursing tank.

I did NOT have a c-section, but this was me, exactly.  It was easy to nurse in gown and had no desire to "get dressed."  When I showered, I just put on a new, clean gown.  I plan to do the same this time, less to pack and mess with.

  • either wear a gown or stay in the hospital gowns.  They are always coming around the first 24-48 hours to push on your belly and check your underwear to see your blood loss.  If you wear pants, you'll have to constantly pull them off or down.

  • With DD, I stayed in the hospital gown and did not like having to keep unbutton the shoulder on it. With DS, I wore a larger t-shirt, nursing bra and a pair of sweatpants. The only problem with that was, I bled on the sweatpants and made DH go get me more so I would pack extra! I was by far more comfortable in the pants, but I do not think I would have been if it was yoga pants. The looseness of the sweats made it comfy, I think the yoga pants would be a little too tight for right after. I may put mine back on in a week after, but will stick to the sweats until then,

  • I sleep in sweatpants, every day. I had a c-section, and still put on my sweats afterwards with no problems. It made me much more comfortable, honestly. I just pulled it down if they needed to check the incision or whatever.

I plan to do the same again.

  • I plan to wear the hospital gown with a robe.  My awesome parents thought ahead and got me a robe for Christmas, just for this, because I didn't have one.  Don't ask me how they knew I didn't have one lol....

I am also going to take some comfy pants to wear home though, but that is all I will wear them for.

  • I had a vaginal delivery and a hospital gown was the only way to go.  First of all you bleed very heavily and even with the net panties/puppy pads/ice pack they give you to wear, you are guaranteed to leak so I would rather mess up a hospital gown. Plus you will be changing that pad/ice pack frequently so a gown is just easier access.  I did change into old yucky sweats before I headed home when we were released and that was fine, but the gown was ideal while in the hospital.
  • I always chose something that buttoned up, so that I could nurse with ease.
  • I packed my SO a pair of mesh shorts to wear in the shower with me if I needed help and it turned out to be the only thing I wanted to put on. I had 3 very bad cuts and about 26 stitches so I couldnt get in and out of regular pants very well BUT I am a very tiny person and those mesh panties wouldnt stay up on there own ( they dont come in sizes ) so I had to wear something . I would bring both and see how comfortable you will be . When I left I had to have my SO dress me because I couldnt lean over to pull up my yoga pants, and all I wanted was those damn mesh shorts back , I put them right back on when we got home  . EVERYONE is different tho and you might be comfy in sweats were other people like just being in a gown . I would suggest bringing something semi tight though just to help you keep those giant pads and ice packs up !!!! HTH
  • I had loose comfy pants. I hated the gown and my doctor asked about bleeding but never actually checked. They felt my belly a lot though and that was easier with pants.

ETA- I bled but didn't leak at all and it eased up quickly. I found that tying the straps on the gown was annoying. A nursing tank was easier.

  • i wore yoga pants, a nursing tank and a robe.

    DD was a vaginal delivery.

  • Note to all: BRING BOTH! I say this just in case you have to have and emergency csec. You never know and I was lucky to have a vaginal birth. I work yoga pants with a loose-fitting waistband. I did have a nursing gown I brought just in case.
  • Gowns.  They are easier for when you need to be checked by nurses.
  • My mom just bought me 2 sets of nursing "lounge-wear" that I plan to pack for post-birth.  Gowns tend to bother me in my sleep because they can get all twisted up.  I think the biggest thing to think about is an easy access top for nursing.  One of mine is elastic pull down and the other has a drop down panel/hooks.

ETA: The fabric is very dark (one black, one navy) so leaks won't show.
