2nd Trimester

What would you do?

I'm 27 weeks- & I'm SICK!!

I feel miserable. I saw my midwife today and she listed a few things that I could take, one being Zicam. The problem is that I feel guilty taking anything when I could probably just ride it out, but then again my midwife told me that my body is likely to take TWICE as long to recover from this cold right now.. :(

MY QUESTION: Would you take medicine?.... or Just tough through the cold??

TIA!

Re: What would you do?

  • Not sure, but I would take a TON of Vitamin C.

  • Thanks, I'm definitely loading up on the Vitamin C!
  • I would probably take something. I tried to suffer through my allergies for awhile but gave in and started on my claritin once I was safely in my second trimester. And I also gave in and asked the dr if I could use Icy Hot for my back and neck. If its making you miserable and the dr says its safe, I say go for it.

No, don't do this.  It's believed that excessive vitamin c can cause preterm labor and there is no significant proof that it will help you get over your cold faster.  No need to risk it.  :)

Are you able to sleep at night?  If not, then yeah I'd probably take something approved by your midwife just to get a good night's sleep.  And of course, drink lots of fluid!

  • I would take anything that is okay'd by my ob, if I was truly that miserable.  I trust their knowledge and experience.

  • If I was truly miserable, I would take something. Sometimes you have to measure the risks against the benefits. If I were truly sick, it would be more of a benefit to me (and the baby!) to heal faster.

  • I wouldn't take anything unless I had a fever and then I would only take tylonol. It seems to me that the medicines keep coming out with new problems and I would feel terrible if they later gave a warning saying it is unsafe for pregnant women. Call mr paranoid but I guess like op said, it is something that can be waited out. It sucks for now but so do lots of things that have to do with pregnancy.

  • Also, Just an FYI for those that are completely confident in their doctors. Keep in mind doctors use to prescribe thilidamide (sp?) for morning sickness. It was then later determined that although the medicine did help with nausea it also caused babies to be born with no arms or legs. I don't think cold medicine will cause a baby to be born with crazy birth defects but I do feel putting 100% trust in your doctor without doing research could end up with dangerous outcomes. This is just my feeling on the matter. I think we should all be allowed to make our own decisions though and more power to you in that regard.

  • I currently have a horrible cold as well and as of tonight I took the smallest dose of Robitussin (plain) to suppress my cough enough to let me sleep a bit. (Which I am obviously not doing because I'm so dang congested.) I did have to take (1) Chloraseptic lozenge yesterday evening because my throat was so sore, but it did the trick and I haven't had to take it again. Usually in the day time I just troop through the symptoms as best as I can because they aren't quite as bad and I figure the less medicine, the better. But I'm still extremely miserable in the evening and early morning.

So basically, yes, I'll only use the medicines on my doctor's list when I feel at my worst and I'll only use them in the smallest quantity possible. I just keep forcing lots of fluids and try to get as much sleep as possible, (which is difficult when you can't breathe, stop coughing or blowing your nose).

I hope you feel better soon!

  • Trust me listen to your midwife. I am still suffering through the cold that I got two weeks ago. I have been taking Robitussin DM which is on my safe list. But I only take it when I feel over powered by the symptoms. I have been coughing so bad I puke so that's when the medicine comes in handy. Also it makes it hard to breath. You don't want the cold to get worse and turn into an infection.

  • Take the meds!  I suffered through a sinus infection for 4 weeks before I caved and I'm so glad I did.  Your baby will endure less stress if you're healthy!

  • I would take the meds. You could always read up on them before taking them.

I take Robitussin CF or DM if I am sick, I take less than the minimum dosage. Make sure to get plenty of rest, wash your hands often and drink lots of fluids!
