3rd Trimester

Uncertain about 39 wk appt I had...questions

So I had my 39 week appt. yesterday and still no progress.

I go to a group practice so I see a variety of doctors.  One of my questions for them this week was what their philosophy is in regards to going over 40 weeks.  He told me they usually don't go over 10 days past..ok fine.  So then I asked if I was going to get a growth ultrasound because I haven't had one since 20 weeks since I haven't had any issues.  His response was, "after your due date."  I would assume that would be my appt next Thursday when I am 40 w 3 d.  When I went to leave and schedule my appt. the receptionist couldn't tell is he ordered a non-stress test and just plugged me in as a "usual" checkup.  So both of these are on my mind.  Plus I had my 6 wk and 20 wk ultrasounds at the practice but needed to get the 12 wk one done at the hospital.

I'm going to call tomorrow to clarify but shouldn't these both be done next week?  Especially if I go even further along to almost 42 weeks, I should have a plan.  My friend who just had her 2nd thought it was weirrd too.

  • Why don't you call and ask?  I had my NST with my daughter at 41 weeks.
    DD (8/12/09), DD (2/8/11)
    BFP 12/16/14| EDD 8/19/15 |MMC 1/15/15 (9 weeks 1 day)

  • Yes, I would def call to clarify. I was so confused with my 39 & 40 week appt that I made sure all my questions were answered before I left at my 41 week.

They had me come back later in the day after my 41 week b/c I had to tell them I hadn't had an ultrasound since my 22 week appt. They tested for fluid and and avg of what the baby may weigh.

And I would clarify with the Doc or one of the Doc's MA's/nurses - sometimes the recp don't always know what's going on.

  • I should've asked before I left but didn't.  Note to self. After looking online and looking at numbers it may get to crunch time.  Ya I plan on calling in the a.m. just curious as to what others near my due date 2nd timers may know/heard.  Thanks!!!

  • These answers will be totally unique to your dr's practice.
  • There is really no need to do a growth scan or an NST unless you have issues. Cramping, bleeding, pain, high blood pressure, abnormal uterus measurements, or decreased fetal movements  - are reasons you would definitely need an NST....there are probably more reasons I'm forgetting.

Your due date is only an estimate...going to 42 weeks can happen.
