I would not take protein powder unless you are working out to build muscle mass, otherwise you will just gain alot of weight. If you are worried about your protein intake, eat protein rich foods (lean meats, yogurt, eggs, etc).

Um, this is complete and utter bunk. Protein is protein is protein and only causes weight gain if eaten in great excess and in caloric excess.
OP - protein powder is fine. If you can find unsweetened/unflavored, it's better. Eating whole foods is preferable, because they're more satiating and there are other vitamins and minerals that you eat in complement when you eat whole foods, but protein powder is neither dangerous nor will it turn you into Ahnold.
You can ask the people at GNC or Vitamin World or try Whey protein powders. You can find some at health food stores like Whole Foods, just make sure there aren't extra additives in it like artificial sweeteners.
