Enfamil AR? Anyone have success with this?

DD has silent reflux (just found out). On Zantac for 6 days with no difference at all. She is currently on Good Start. Upon pedi's req, we tried Gentlease tonight and she wouldnt take more than an ounce, She hated it. Wondering if switching to Enfamil AR will help? She seems to like the taste of Good Start and has good poops, but the poor baby has the silent reflux.

We are taking her back in tomorrow to see about trying Prevacid too. But, wanted to see if there is a miracle out there with just a switch of formula.

Thanks

  • Good start was shiiiiittt to LO, he hated it, spit up all of it .. was a disaster. When i talked to pedi he said he wants me to go onto A.R, but didnt have any in his office so he gave me gentlease for now untill i go to WIC to get the checks for A.R. i did google it though, and reviews have been pretty well. But my LO loves gentlease, and your LO doesnt, so its all about what LO likes. Picky picky kids we have!

  • our DD has reflux as well - we had a hell of a time finding the right formula. we tried the AR and it actually really seemed to agree with her and help but it caused her to be very constipated (im talking big rock hard poops that must've hurt for her to pass) so i couldnt bring myself to keep giving them to her. we are currently on the gentlease with 1 tbsp of rice cereal added to her 5 oz bottle (gives it a little bit of the weight and thickness of AR without constipating her or adding too many calories. our GI pedi told us that to weigh the formula down as much as AR - the idea being that it's less likely to come back up- it would take 1 tbsp PER OUNCE of formula which would most likely also constipate her and would add a lot more calories. the AR is great because it doesnt add the calories. you might want to try alimentum or nutramigen - its pre-digested basically so the proteins are very broken down which makes it easier to digest and pass through the system more quickly which can help it stay down (it is thin but you could always add rice cereal as well). this is also helpful if the reflux results from a protein allergy.

also, zantac did not work well for us and i havent heard of too many people having success with it. we are on prevacid - 7.5mg twice a day and we have seen a improvment in the last week since she has been on that and the gentlease.

just some other advice that our pedi gave us that was really helpful - burp after every ounce during feeding, hold upright for 15 minutes after a feeding (even if she has a dirty diaper - dont change her right away), and incline the mattress or sleep her somewhere that she is more upright. GL!!!

  • Pk we have changed formula 3 times. We tried the gentlease and it didn't work for us. The pedi did prescribe the zantac and also switched us to the nutramgean(sp). It is more expensive than the others but wic will cover it here in NC. Our DD seems to be taking it much better. It is supposed to help colic and it is a lactose free type milk.
  • We use the Parents Choice with added rice starch (just like the enfamil AR).  It works like a charm.  I didn't even bother asking the Dr. first because I didn't want to waste a Dr's visit and this is what the ped. said to do with dd #1 and it also worked for her.  I did tell her ped about it at her 2 month visit and he said I was doing the right thing.  You do have to get the fast flow nipples though, because it seems to clog the nipple.  I asked ped how long to keep her on it and he said to try taking her off of it at 6 months and if she still has reflux, just to put her right back on it.
  • My DSes both have severe reflux and we've been losing our minds trying to find a combo of meds & formula that work. They've been on Enfacare, gentlease, nutramigen and now they're on enfamil AR. So far, AR is about the same as the gentlease in terms of how it affects their reflux. Maybe marginally better. Like the p.p. it made them constipated so they're also on colace & and ounce of prune juice per day. That took care of the constipation. Now if I could just find a medication that works I'd be all set. (Zantac and prevacid both don't work all that great for my boys)
