She went to school this year at the University of Alabama, and was thrilled as we LOVE the state. We vacation on the Gulf Coast, and have spent a lot of time in Alabama and Louisiana.
Moving there and going to school however were a totally different story for my sister. The culture shock was huge for her. (BY no means a slam on southerners ) We are in the Midwest, and she went to a rather diverse High School. She was really shocked at the amount of "racial division" that still exists there. I am not making her out to be a goody goody, but The school (maybe more the population of students) that she has loved and dreamed about and pined for was nothing like she expected. She is going back this semester, but not next year.
This whole winter break was like a bad break-up for her. I just feel so badly and know how much she wanted to love it there! I know how much we love it down there, and would move in a heartbeat!

My little sister also goes to University of Alabama! What year is she in? My sister has mentioned the samething about racial thing too!
I can totally relate! We moved to Memphis from Minnesota when I was in MN and it was REALLY REALLY hard to understand the racism.. from both sides. People said things and used words I didn't think you were suppose to EVER use, in regular conversation!
My brother was told by some of his girlfriends fathers they weren't allowed to ride in his car when he drove him black friends around.
I like to believe in 16 years it's changed, but It really can be a different world.
