Babies: 6 - 9 Months

wtf - solids advice from my pedi. . . .

we started solids a few weeks ago, right at 6 months, we have given him sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, squash, apples, and bananas.  he likes them and I give him what he wants - had been taking 1/3 of a stage 1 jar per day when we had the appointment, now he takes closer to a whole 2.5 ounce jar per sitting.

Anyways, I told my pedi this and he told me that he needs 3 solid meals a day and to give my lo solids before he breastfeeds so he eats more solids, also he told me to cut out all fruit and just do veggies.  WTF, does this sound off to anyone else, isn't milk the #1 thing for him for the 1st year??

  • I posted about this last week when I got the same advice from my pedi.  He told me to feed her three times a day and food before bottle.

  • Our pedi said the opposite.  He told me DD's bottles were the most important and that solids were secondary.  DD also eats the minimum amount of ounces recommended for her age, so I'm not sure if that had something to do with his advice or not.

  • That is definitely NOT what I was told. Our pediatrician didn't really say anything except to give him a wide variety of foods. He also said that there was no right order. Kids will always prefer fruits to veggies because they're sweet. Kind of makes me give your pedi the side eye. BM is super important.
  • Our doctor told us the exact opposite!  He said that formula should still be his main source of vitamins and nutrients until age 1.  He also said to always feed him a bottle prior to offering solids and not to try to replace bottles with solids.

  • Everything I have read and been told (even from my pediatrician) is that formula/breatmilk should be #1 and you are right in your thinking. I give Keegan solids at least an hour after he gets a bottle. He started off at 4 months with one meal a day (breakfast). I started earlier b/c he wasn't satisfied with formula alone. We started VERY slow and introduced dinner once a bunch of foods were introduced to him. At 7 months he started getting 3 meals a day. We still have formula as his #1 source of food and the solids are secondary. Stick with your gut. Take it slow. Your little one is obviously doing good with what you are doing! =)

  • Ours was the opposite as well. Then again my pedi also just told me at our 6m apt that if he learned out to drink out of a straw we could give him diet pop or sprite Indifferent. At least he said if we do juice to dilute it..

Oh and he also said I could give him cheeseburgers (I'm sure he meant cut up) I still side-eyed him when he told me he does this with all his kids since they were 8mo.

He is a family friend and I love him as a Pedi, but lets just say I will be feeding my LO differently lol.

Yup this is what I thought too. I don't take any of his advice on eating. I am close to the family and I know that his wife does not let their kids eat like that (maybe he does when shes not there)

but he is a very good pediatrician with everything else I will not knock him on that one because he knows what he's talking about, he's just really REALLY laid back.

  • Maybe it depends on where your child is in the weight percentile? My pedi also said to give solids before bottle but that is because DS recently starting downing 40-48 oz of BM/formula daily. DS is in the 90th percentile for weight.

  • I got about the same information from my pedi.  He told me to feed him solids first and then bf.  He also is against commercial baby food and feels it doesn't challenge babies enough with different textures.  He also recommends giving a sippy cup of whole milk with his meals.  Needless to say, I do what I feel is best for Jackson and censor what I tell the pedi about his diet.
