Postpartum Depression

Wellbutrin DURING pregnancy. dosage?

I was on wellbutrin pre-pregnancy and I stopped the day I found out I was expecting. I was told by my peri that I could continue if I felt I needed it, but I didn't want to risk it.

Well, I'm at the point now, where I need it. It's affecting my ability to take care of myself and my 5 year old DD.

I have a call into my peri, but I'm curious if anyone else was on wellbutrin while they were pregnant, and what dose you were taking.

TIA

Re: Wellbutrin DURING pregnancy. dosage?

  • I am not pregnant yet, but are TTC while on Wellbutrin. I have spoken with my OB/GYN and my Psychiatrist at great lengths about being on the medication while pregnant. My OB did express some concerns saying there is the potential for birth defects while on the medication in 1st trimester. I asked my Psychiatrist and she said there is a risk, but it's about 3%. She said the odds are greater for spontaneous abnormalities than abnormalities caused by the medication.

She also mentioned that she wants to keep me on Wellburtin when I do get pregnant because my being off the medication will have a far worse effect on an unborn child than the medication itself. It was also mentioned that she does have patients who breastfeed while on the medication with no side effects.

I'm currently at 150mg 2X a day and she has not said anything about altering my dose once a pregnancy occurs. Hope that helps!!

  • With my first pregnancy I was on Zoloft until the third trimester.  Now OB and Psychiatrist are saying nothing first trimester.  This alarms me since I took Zoloft with my first baby.  But the past six months I've been on wellbutrin and I stopped now that I"m pregnancy because it's a category C.  I think Zoloft is category B so if I end up taking anything I'll take that.  What I REALLY need and am worried about is sleeping medicine and I don't think anything is safe.  Good luck
