RSV Q

When can we stop worrying so much about RSV? I still worry but everyone else seems to not care anymore. They all still wash their hands but they looked at me like I was nuts when I told a friend she needs to change her clothes when she gets here from being on the nasty airplane.I think it's still good to take all precautions to prevent it, it's much easier than having Lyla back in the hospital...how come no one else seems to get it though?

Re: RSV Q

  • I would keep it up until the end of RSV season which is May 1 in our area.  This year we are not going crazy but E is in daycare so it is a lost cause.

I'm following this advice since cold and flu season don't end here in CO until around May.

I think you are so right on the money - asking people to change clothes, wash hands, etc.  People are just clueless even when you DO try to clue them in.

The CDC does have an RSV status for each state and region on their website.

  • Andrew is 2 years old.  We are still careful, but don't worry as much.  I've been taking him out - grocery, restaurants, and even the children's museum and a mom's group (he hasn't gotten sick from either yet!), but we wash wash wash hands and are careful not to be around sick kids.

  • I know we already talked about this, but... :)  I totally agree with you.  Other people just don't get it because they haven't gone through what we NICU moms have, and they don't understand what it's like to have LO in the hospital.  Keep doing what you are doing to keep little L healthy!

  • So My Gwen was not a micro preemie, but and neither was Nolan, but he was 5 weeks early, and had some lung issues.

DS1's first winter he was hospitalized for RSV, and it was no joke. Since then he gets sick and it goes straight to his lungs. He takes nebulizers twice a day, and just generally has crappy lungs. I nanned that same winter for triplets who were born at 32 weeks, and they all three got it then as well. Two of the three were in the hospital as well, and were two at the time. We simply DO NOT mess around with it.  My brother travels for a living, as well as my dad, and My sister is in a dorm, so they all are to change and shower when arriving to visit. It is what it is, and if they do not care for it, whatever!

Gwen is more compromised than Nolan, and he struggles even with the common cold. RSV is a big deal, and who cares if you look like a psycho! We have a great pedi nurse, and she got Gwen three more synagis shots than originally covered by insurance, which will take us through March, so that helps.

    Keep protecting your baby!
