Wipes Warmers - Good or Bad?

Hi ladies,

I am having a hard time determining whether a wipes warmer will be necessary for LO or not. Initially, I thought I would definitely get one but then read a lot of negative reviews on them regarding bacteria growth in the warmer due to temperature, lids not staying shut leading to dried out wipes, babies developing infections like UTIs or getting diaper rash all of a sudden - eek! Do any of you use a warmer or plan to use one? I use makeup remover pads for my eye makeup at night and those things feel frigid! I just felt concerned for LO's bottom! I should add though, that I live in one of the warmest regions of Southern California so maybe they're not necessary...?

Re: Wipes Warmers - Good or Bad?

  • I used/use one with ds#1 and will with this one too. I've never had an issue with bacterial growth - and the few times that my dh has left the lid open and the wipes dried a bit, I just added a few drops of water and they were good as new.

  • I know some people love them but I think they seem kind of gross and won't be using one.

  • We will not be using one.  I heard stories of people that did use them and then when they were out LO would freak out because of the cold wipe and they were used to warm ones.

  • We had one with LO.  I thought it was going to be awesome.  To be completely honest, it was a waste

I used it initially, but just stopped spending time loading it as it was much easier to throw a bag of wipes in his diaper drawer.

I don't even know where it is now, but I have no plans on using it again.  In the beginning I used a lot of warm wash clothes anyway.

  • This is my first child, so I don't have an experience. But IMO, it's a want not a need. So for me personally, I won't be getting one. My LO won't hate me for life because I used room temperature wipes on her.

  • Waste of money, IMO.

  • I got one for free from a friend who never used it so we'll probably try it out. Not sure I would've bought one otherwise, though.

  • I think they are a waste.  Is a room termperature or cold wipe really that tramatic?  When you are out and about you won't have a warm wipe anyways.
  • thanks for the feedback mamas! :) I was leaning toward not getting the warmer but was still somewhat on the fence. I've heard that a lot of people just hold the wipe for a few seconds in their hands to warm it with their own body temperature. I'll probably just do that :)

  • We were going to register for one until the BRU Advisor told us not to.  She basically said that if you get your baby used to using the warm wipes, what's gonna happen when you don't have a warm wipe to use...they're going to scream/fuss.  it's better to get them used to the cold ones.  that was an easy choice for us to take off the registry.

  • In additon to what others have said.  I've read some have caught on fire.  I only use warm wash cloths in the begining then will cautiously switch over to wipes (one of my DDs has skin sensitivities like me and Olivia has a chance of having them as well so I have to be careful I dont want her to go through what both my other girls did over allergies to diapers and wipes)

  • Never ever used one.  Why get your kid used to warm wipes when most of the time when you're out and about you won't have access to them?  It's the same principle as getting your kid accustomed to warm milk or formula - once they're used to warm, they will likely flip out if you're stuck somewhere and need to try to give them something cold or room temp.  There's no harm in room temp wipes, and the bacteria potential is an extra needless headache.

  • While there's no harm in room temperature wipes, I just think how I would feel if put in the same situation. I'd prefer a nice warm wipe to a room temp one, especially with the amount of changes a baby goes through. Just my two cents...

  • With DD, we didn't have a warmer at first.  Once we were home from the hospital, she screamed through every diaper change when we used wipes.  We decided to try a warmer and it worked like a charm.  We still use it.  At day care, they don't have a warmer and it's not an issue for DD.

  • I don't plan to use one.  As the others said, I want LO to be okay with room temp wipes because I will be changing him in a variety of settings (and so will DH and others).  If the wipes are especially cold on a winter's day, I imagine I will try to warm them up a bit first or use a warm washcloth.  But I really don't want to encourage pickiness.

  • lame!!!  I never used ours!  It was a waste of money!

Edit:  I agree with PP about cold versus warm wipes down the road for baby.  I feel the same way with warming milk.   We never warmed DS's milk...it was always cold or luke-warm.  We didn't use a bottle warmer either.  GL!

  • I was given one by my cousin and she swears by it. I view it as a non-necessity, but nice to have and since I didn't buy it, I'll take it.

  • I think they are a waste. I always noticed the wipes got cool as soon as they were taken out of there anyway.
