How long did DC sleep in your room?

Isabelle either sleeps in her bassinet or co-sleeps with us. How long did it take you to move DC to his/her room? I have a feeling it will take me months!

Re: How long did DC sleep in your room?

  • Ben slept in our room til he was a little over 6 months old.  Ben was sleeping great, we were sleeping great, it was fine.  When he stopped sleeping well, I decided that while it was sucking, we might as well make the change.

Do it when you're ready and comfortable with it.  THere's no need for it unless you're unhappy with your situation.

  • I know this will sound uncaring but we had DS in his own room in his crib from day 1 home. Somtimes we let him sleep with us in the early morning 5 or 6 am on a weekend. And when we were camping this summer he slept with us. Also if we are out of town and no crib. But other than that he is in his room. We did this due to my SIL's son has major sereration/sleep issues and we wanted our DS to get used to sleeping in his own room righ from the start.

  • DS 1 went into his crib at 4 weeks and DS 2 went into his crib at 9 weeks.
  • She was in our room in her PnP for maybe a month.  She is a talker/grunter in her sleep and I was just not sleeping....I would get up with every noise and check on her....most of the time waking her up in the process.  So we made the switch to put her into her room and now both her and I slept much better!
  • Logan slept on top of one of us until he was about 3 mos. old...no joke...literally on top of one of us. Then we put him in our room for about a week then he went into his own room because we couldn't take the lack of sleep any more and I went back to work. Liam always slept in his own bed (I would never let a child sleep on top of me for three mos again, he got big and it hurt) He was in his own room by 2 mos.?

  • Payton was in our room until she was 4mo old.  She started off in a bassinet and then ended up between DH and I... it was so much easier to BF at night with her right there.  But I never slept well with her in bed with us so once I started weaning to p/t BFing after going back to work, we just put her in her crib at night and instead of the boob, she got a bottle.  It was exhausting getting up to feed her but when I did sleep, I slept soundly.

And you know, it's whatever works best for you.  My mom constantly nagged at me for cosleeping and I wish I would have told her to MYOB because it was what worked for us.  Don't pressure yourselves to move her into her own room/crib if you're not ready... You're her mom and mommy always knows best.

    :)

  • We still co-sleep. It just works for our family. Contrary to popular belief, DS is great sleeper and very independent during the day time.  Do what works for you. They are only babies once, no need to rush if it is working for you.

  • That's a really good point... being independent has more to do with their feeling of security with you than their being separated from you early on... so don't feel like keeping them in your room is goign to make them clingy and needy...  Read Dr. Sears' work on "attachment parenting" if you're interested in that kind of stuff... I found for me anyway that it really jived with the way I naturally wanted to parent.

  • Another noisy baby here! We moved DD into her own room at about 6 weeks old. Before that she was in the bassinette in our room... although the first couple weeks she and I both slept on the couch ;) Having her in our room did make BFing much easier during the night but I just couldn't sleep with all her little noises.
  • I had Alex in a bassinet til 2 weeks old then to his cribi

Willow refused to sleep unless she was held, and upright - we couldn't lay her down.  Rod slept with her in his arms while he slept on the couch for about 4 weeks, then we were able to slowly transition her to the crib - about 5 or 6 weeks old

Neither kids slept in bed with me, I'm a real grump and demand sleep - I never wanted them in my bed

  • We used a bassinnette in our room until she was 5.5 months old.  (I LOVED our bassinnette, it was dark wood and matched our bedroom furniture perfectly!)  ;)

It worked well for us and when we did transition I initially just moved the bassinnette to her room for a few days before actually putting her in her crib.

I've had a rule ever since, that if she wakes up after 5am, she gets to co-sleep until we get up.  Before 5am and we would try to get her back down in her room.

  • DD still sleeps in our bed and will at least until she stops eating at night.  I agree wholeheartedly with pp's about independence having to do more with security and trust.  I believe that we should baby our babies and follow their queues while they're young.

  • great question!
Norah still sleeps in our room but in a pack n play next to our bed. We took her out of our bed around 2-2.5 months. Her room is down the hall from us so its not THAT far of a walk, but its just so conveinent having her right next me when shes up around 7:30 because I can nurse her and shes back asleep until 10ish...Im not sure when we'll move her :(

  • DS was in our room for 2 nights.  In his crib from then on.  :-)
  • You might think I'm heartless, but Nathan slept in his PNP in our room for five weeks, and then we moved him to his crib in his own room. He started sleeping MUCH better.

  • The first 7 weeks.  DH and I like to have the TV on in our room to watch the 11 o'clock news.  That doesn't mesh so well with a baby who goes to bed at 7 or 8!  I think we've all slept better since he's been in his crib.  We don't have to tiptoe around (and worry about the lights being too bright or DH snoring too loud) the baby.

  • Oh and P.S. - I think it might make a difference with how far your bedrooom is from the nursery.  If the master was downstairs and the nursery upstairs, for instance, I probably would've kept him in longer.  Lucky for us, the nursery and master are next to each other.  We never co-slept.  DS has reflux and has always needed to be elevated at night.  He slept in a bassinette then a PnP until he moved to his crib (7 weeks).

  • we're still co sleeping, she goes down around 7pm in her crib then at about 2-3am she wakes up to eat and we bring her into bed with us.  I love having her in bed with us and so does she :)  I also nap with her when I can! :)

  • He still is.  He sleeps in the pnp next to me.  This works for us and he's STTN since he was 2 months (with the exception of only 2 nights).  Whne he starts kicking at night I bring him into bed and he'll sleep a few hours more.  I don't see moving him until he's one - not looking forward to that at all.  I love cuddling with him.
