Baby Moving? What's it like?

How far along were you when you first felt your baby move?  What did it feel like?  I know I probably won't be able to feel mine for at least a couple weeks yet (or so I've been told), but I have some friends that said they felt their baby between 15 and 16 weeks.. so hopefully I'll get to feel he/she soon.  And where do you feel it?  Is it like the lower abdomen?  Sides?

I am clueless on what to expect!

Re: Baby Moving? What's it like?

  • Mine feel like a muscle twitch and seldom like a large gas bubble that's popping out on my skin. It's an odd feeling and you will notice it. I felt my little girl's movement two days before I became 21 weeks. Sometimes it's very low, sometimes on either side, and sometimes right at my belly button. She has a new thing though and that is kicking my back and butt.

It's an odd feeling at first.

  • i felt strange things earlier on but the first time i was sure it was LO and not some odd pregnancy related thing was at 20w5d! it felt like a muscle twitch...like when your eye twitches... but in my belly! it seems to always be towards the lower left side for me, between one and three fingers below my belly button! it is getting stronger and stronger now! When i am sitting, it is right in the middle but two or three fingers below the belly button!!! When you feel it for the first time and there is nothing else it could be it is amazing!!! it could take as long as twenty-four weeks tho so dont stress!!! you could always try drinking a cold glass of milk and lying down and you might feel something!

    good luck!

  • I felt my baby move for the first time at about 20 weeks.  It is like a gigantic eye twitch in you lower abdomen.  Sometimes like a bird flapping.  I was so afraid I was going to miss it, because like you, I had no idea what to expect.  They say you feel your second child sooner because the uterus is stretched and you know what to feel for.  I am feeling LO right now...just ate breakfast.  That usually gets 'em movingSmile  It is the best feeling!  Now I can't wait for the kicks to be strong enough for DH to feel!

  • At first like a gas bubble for me. I felt it at 15 or so weeks but wasn't 100% sure.

At 18 to 20 weeks, it felt like a tiny pop every so often.

Now, my baby is kicking and moving a lot! And it seriously feels like a little bang or punch from the inside. I have to say, it's a little like those alien movies...b/c you can feel it from the outside. Sometimes there is almost a vibration feeling. I think it depends on the positioning of the baby, but I tend to feel it low or to the left side the most. This morning, I think he had hiccups. I woke up to rythmic pokes in the center of my uterus. I feel it the most when I am laying down on my side or if I roll a little to my back (still keeping my weight mostly to my side). Particularly after I eat OR first thing in the morning.

It feels awesome!!!! You just wait!!!

  • I think I felt my first move around 18 weeks or so.  It felt like someone was flicking me with their fingers from the inside......low.  I kept feeling it and thought nothing of it and then the light bulb when off!  I said "I THINK I CAN FEEL THE BABY!!!!!" and it just gets cooler from there.  I used to love feeling him roll over and stretch....it's amazing!
  • In terms of timing, don't worry too much. It's different for everyone. I've heard 16 to 18 weeks. Right now, your baby is still very small. Probably moving a lot, but you just can't feel it yet. Drink some orange juice! But don't stress. You'll feel your babe soon enough.

Perfect way to describe it! LOL I was 18 weeks. Still waiting to feel her from the outside. Its always super low for me because she is breech, I think I've only felt it once or twice up higher.

  • I've felt movement every few days for about a week now. It's like a gas bubble, only in a place that you wouldn't feel gas usually. Also, it will be in the same spot for a few moments...you'll notice it :)

  • Thanks ladies!  I just kind of want to know what to expect - I don't want to miss it!
  • I started feeling the "eye twitch" like movement around 16-17 weeks.  I wasn't even sure it was the baby at first.  Starting at 18 weeks it was stronger and I thought I could feel it from the outside but I wasn't sure.  Last night, DH was able to feel it.  Actually I'm feeling it now. Its not consistent at all and I don't expect it to be for some time.  Its still really low, the highest I've felt is a few inches below my belly button. Usually its still only an inch or so above my hair line.

  • I felt the baby for the first time this week (18 weeks) and it felt like a little flap or a flick.  So cool.
  • I started feeling my baby around 16 weeks, in the lower left side, a twitch like others are saying.  Someone else once described the movement like a fish swimming around in a plastic bag, which it can feel like this too. Recently there is so much moving and flip flopping it's hard to miss.  Though I think my baby just moves a ton, because I was told at yesterday's appt that I have an anterior placenta.  My baby's movements are mostly on the side, though every once in a while I'll feel a bump around my belly button, around my lower back, and best of all right in the bladder!  At this point, when I do feel movement, I would describe it like a huge heart beating in my belly.  It's pretty cool, even when I need to stop more often to go to the bathroom, or keeps me awake at night.  I can't wait to meet my baby!

  • I started feeling the little flutters/twitches around when I was about 16 weeks or so maybe 17. Then by 20 at least for me they were pretty decent jabs. Now you can see my entire belly moving and sometimes depending where he decides to move it can be a tad be painful or uncomfortable. But it is such a cool and amazing feeling! Sometimes I wish I could get a view inside to see exactly what he is doing in there for some entertainment.

  • I felt my first flutters around 16 weeks as well.  At about 20 weeks I could distinctly feel full on jabs/kicks.  Now when he kicks I can see it from the outside, it's neat.
  • kind of feels like rising bubbles then like pressure in one place at first
