Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Yes, this is another post about transitioning to a cup!

I'm sorry that this is such a popular topic, and here I am asking another question about it. I want to be done with the bottles because I HATE washing them and all their parts (dr. brown's) every day. DD does really well with water in a sippy (like many other LOs), but will only take a few gulps from the milk sippys and be done.

My question is this: what cup do you use? We have two nuby soft spouts, one nuby straw cup and one tommee tippee cup that has a semi soft spout. Are there some out there that look more like a bottle because I think this may help.

Just a little more info: DD drinks only water out of her sippys; she has never had juice. Her bottles are pumped BM.

  • We have had excellent luck with the Gerber cups (soft spout) despite having used Dr. Brown's bottles.  What made the transition easier was to do it to one bottle at a time, but treat it the same as the bottle (i.e. if you sit with her in a certain spot, read a certain book, etc...).  IWe were down to one bottle (right before bed) in no time.  A month ago, I decided to give her a cup at that time, just to see what would happen, and she drank it like a champ.  Good luck to you!

Thank you for your reply! DD just gets so mad at me when I try to give her a cup during a feeding. I guess it will just take time. I'm going to look into those sippys though!

  • It also helps to start the transition with the bottle that she is least interested in.  For us, it was the after nap bottle.  Is there a bottle that DD seems to lack interest in, or isn't as interested in?
  • I pushed more with the dairy like yogurt, cheese, etc while we did the bottle to cup transition so I didn't worry so much if she rejected the milk. I dropped one bottle at a time over a month. We use the munchkin brand from target. Not joking I probably have 10 types of cups, but this is the one that worked for us. I think the best advice I got was don't stress, and it will all come in time.

  • Try Gerber Nuk cups with a handle.  They have a soft spout, and ds loves them.  We lucked out, because daycare was trying different cups with him, so they actually found the cup he liked and then told us to buy some for him.  We switched to sippy from bottle very seamlessly once we bought several of those.
