IUGR

Hi!  I've been lurking on here since I found out we were expecting twins (mono/di girls).  Everyone seems to have such great advice and now I'm hoping I can receive some of it.  We had our monthly ultrasound this past Monday (30w, 2d).  Up until then, everything has been going as it should, but now baby A is starting to fall off the growth curve.  Her estimated weight is 2 lbs 6 oz where her sister is measuring at 2 lbs12 oz and 3 weeks ahead in gestational age.  They told us that this was the start of IUGR and to expect to deliver in the next 4 weeks if not sooner.  We'll have ultrasounds twice a week if not more to monitor and I was given two shots of steroids.  Our peri made the comment that if I make it to 32 weeks, we'll schedule the delivery.  This is my first pregnancy, and DH and I are pretty scared at the thought of delivering so soon.  If anyone has any experience with this, I would love to hear it or other stories (both good and bad) of delivering between 32 and 34 weeks.  TIA!

Re: IUGR

  • Congrats and welcome out of lurkdom!

IUGR is pretty scary, but it's good they're monitoring you so closely.  I went for a regular NST at 34w4d and an hour later got told, "we think baby A has stopped growing.  The good news is we don't have to deliver the babies now... but we do have to deliver tomorrow morning.  Which hospital would you like to use?"

I freaked out.  We were NOT ready.  Not ready for premies, not ready to leave work, and not ready to be parents.

The estimates were slightly off since the boys were 4-9 and 4-13, but I'm glad they were cautious. DS2 was in the NICU for 10 days and DS1 was in for 13.

Keep taking care of yourself and hang in there.  30 weeks is great, and every day beyond that is even better.  Good luck!

  • Congrats! Mo/Di girls are the best in my opinion!  I was being watched for IUGR and TTTS from 16 weeks on. Ella was 3 weeks behind and Sophia was 1 week behind in growth and they both had amniotic fluid issues (one too much, the other too little). I started weekly u/s at 26 weeks and was officially diagnosed with TTTS and IUGR at 27 weeks. I was given the steriod shots and 2 days later my girls were born. Every baby is different. We are on day 48 of the NICU and it is hard to try to compare the girls to one another as well as other babies in the NICU. It is all up to each individual child as to what is going to happen. It is scary to have a preemie but it has made me appreciate every diaper, every feeding, every burp so much than I would have. Good luck and PM me with questions. Also the steriod shots hurt more than the spinal does so dont be scared!

  • My Grace was diagnosed with IUGR but not until after she was born.  Like you they were Mo/Di and grew at the same rate or very close until about 30 weeks when Grace dropped off.  They continued to monitor me and the Peri said that it was still okay.  Now looking back I think they should maybe have delivered earlier.  He was trying to get me to 36 weeks.  They came at 36 weeks exactly and weighed 5 lbs 2 oz. and 4 lbs 3 oz.  Grace was so small and her head was larger than anything else.  The Dr in the NICU said that was the IUGR and that all of her energy went to her brain/head growing and her little body would catch up.  She is still smaller than her sister and therefore they don't look as ID as other twins, but she is healthy.  I know that you will likely dleiver before 36 weeks, but I think if you can wait until 34 then that will be better.  Be prepared for NICU and just rest and take care of yourself.  GL!
