Breast pump - ? for 2nd time moms

So I tried pumping/ bfing with my first and it didn't work well. So i want to buy a Medela breast pump this time (I bought a cheapy one last time).

Could I take it to the hospital with me so I could ask the nurses how to properly use it instead of trying to figure it out at home by myself? Or would this be a dumb thing to do.

I know this is probably a dumb question but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask :)

  • Check with your hospital.  They might have a breastfeeding class that you could attend before the baby.  At my hospital they had a demo pump that you could try with (over your shirt of course).

  • It wouldn't hurt to take it.  I had a Medela PISA and honestly it wasn't very hard to use it.  I was a 1st timer and had no problem figuring it out at home.
  • Absolutely. Most hospitals have lactation consultants available who would love to help you in any way they can.

I did not take my medela pump to the hospital.

What i would reccommend is see what brand your hospital supplies because if it is medela there is no reason to bring yours. You can just use there pump. If the use ameda they are also good and BRU sells them too

A plus to using theres (even though it will not be exactly yours) is that they will give you a new supply kit. They will bill your health insurance yes but it will not have to come out of your pocket.

Also they will tell you that if the shield is correct. DO not be scared to go up a size even later in the shield because the bigger they are the more comfortable they are and less issues like clogged milk ducts.

Oh and have the lactation nurses come in everyday you are there because no one will be there when you get home.

Good luck and you can do it!!!

  • I would recommend taking it with you.  Leave it in the car until baby is born and then have DH or SO go get it when you are ready for assistance with it.  I have the PISA and it was pretty easy to figure out, but previous poster made a good comment about getting the right shield.  If you are having problems, this could be a correlation.

Definitely ask for help from lactation consultants!

  • I would take it with you.  I used the hospital pump for like 3 weeks and it cost me only like $30 less than the PISA, so I ended up just buying the PISA.  It isn't hard to use but I started pumping the last day in the hospital and wished I'd been trying to pump sooner.  My milk took 5 days to come in.

  • I have a Medela PIS too.  It wasn't hard to figure out, but I realize now that the supply problems I was having might have been due to the horns (that you place on the breasts) being too small.  You can get a lot of info online, plus there is also information that comes with the pump.
