So we went to DS' 4 month appt yesterday. We were talking to his Dr. (who is a family practice Dr, not technically a pedi.) and he asked how ds is sleeping. We said pretty well but he's still in his swing. I cleared the swing with him at the 1 month appt. Dr. looks concerned and says...
"Well we prefer that babies sleep on their stomachs to help prevent SIDs."
My head almost fell off. I said "what?" He repeated himself. DH, who has done ZERO research, tried to tell him he was mistaken. Dr. says "Hmmm, I'm pretty sure..."
Who in the helll doesn't know that?!
And he apparently completely forgot our discussion of the swing 3 months ago.
New pedi, go.
Re: Holy Sh!t, pedi is a moron!
Thank you for pointing out that a white coat does not mean that a dr knows all. To often people just blindly trust. "But the dr said so".
Good luck finding a new dr.

I just keep thinking about how lucky it is that I'm my 30's and have done my own research and not 15 and confused. We go to a clinic with a lot of lower income patients many of whom are really young single mothers and it scares me to think about who else he's talking to and what other misinformation he's passing on.
I may have to call the clinic and tell them what happened.
I'm not surprised, really. It depends on how old he is. My parents were advised to have us sleep on our stomachs so that in case we got sick, we didn't choke and die. It just depends on what he was taught. Parents should do what they are comfortable with. We let DD sleep on her tummy for naps, but bedtime, "Back is Best"

I'm not concerned with tummy sleeping in and of itself- I know plenty of parents choose to have dc tummy sleep. I'm concerned with him misquoting the sids campaign. It makes me wonder what else he's confused about.
Time for a new doctor ASAP
Definitely not defending the pedi, who should really know that babies should be placed on their backs, BUT... it's not "common sense" or something that "even people who have never had children know better than"... all of our parents were advised to put us to sleep on our stomachs, because back then that was thought to prevent SIDS. And I don't think our parents or their pediatricians were dumb or ignoring common sense; it was what they thought was best at the time. However, any pediatrician practicing now should know that's not the most current research.
