How do I go about picking a Pediatrician?

I don't even know where to start. Does my  Pediatrician need to have rights at the hospital I am giving birth at? The general pract. I go to is part of another Hospital.

  • I found the best resource to be recommendations from other moms - do you have any friends/relatives/coworkers with young children that you can talk to?

This is exactly what I did - asked around.  I'm not sure about the practices/hospital piece.  Our pedi is affiliated w/ the hospital I'll deliver at, but whichever pedi is on call will see baby after delivery and during our stay.  GL!  We love our pedi!

  • I asked other moms.  If you don't know a lot of other moms then ask around on your local bump or nest board.  I then called and made an appt to see the office and meet the pedi.  The one was chose has rights but does not actually go to the hospital since she is the only Dr in her practice and the hostipal is an hour away.  She told us to use the on call and then advised what we did and did not have to accept as far as shots/procedures at the hospital.  Once we delivered we just called the office and made our appt to bring LO in for her first visit.

I know that there have been lots of posts with questions you should have on hand to ask the pedi.  You could google that and find other reasources for important things to think about and ask when making your decision.

    Good luck!

  • I got recs from other moms.  My pedi doesn't have rights at the hosp I'm delivering at because it's in another town.  The pedi on call saw her at delivery then I took her to our regular pedi for the 2 wk check up.

If you don't have mom friends, ask anyone you know in the medical field (they know all the good gossip and who is known as a screw-up) and also as your OB and the nurses in your OB's office who they use.

  • I got recs from friends, my OB, my local nest/bump board, and my insurance company and went from there.  I googled their name to make sure there were no major complaints (I took everything I read with a grain of salt though).  My pediatrician does not visit LO in the hospital, so they do not need to have rights at the hospital I am delivering at.  If you have a preference of a certain hospital, I would consider finding a pedi that has rights at it, in case your LO ever needs to be admitted.  DS was admitted for a week in September and luckily our pedi was affiliated with the hospital of our choice (I had never really thought about it before).  Good luck... I thought it was going to be a stressful decision, but I went with the first pedi I chose to visit with before DS was born.

  • My OB actually gave us a list of pedi's in all the surrounding cities/counties.  So first we narrowed down which ones take our insurance, then we narrowed down to location.  For me, I wanted a practice that was as close to where we live as possible.  We set up our first appointment after baby was born and luckly, we are very happy with them.  If not, we would have tried another place, until we found one we liked.

It doesn't matter if they have rights at your hospital. let me explain....

At the hospital/L&D unit I work for, someone comes in with their pedi picked out. If that group/dr come to our hospital, then they will see you while you are there and f/u once you leave.

If the pedi you picked does not have rights at our hospital, your OB will "recommend" a pedi that does have rights at the hospital to see you while you are inpatient then all records will be send to your "follow-up" pedi when you are discharged.

My point is that if you really like a dr then don't worry about them having privileges at the hospital you plan to deliver at.
