Bottle Warmer? Is it necessary?

Should I register for a bottle warmer? I am not sure why I would need one? How do you "make up a bottle" (with formula)? How do you usually heat up a bottle? Sorry new to this..

Re: Bottle Warmer? Is it necessary?

  • Personally, I think that it would be a waste of money.  We would just microwave a mug of water and put the bottle in there---it was simple and worked well for us!  GL

  • I registered for one. You pour water in it and it steams your bottles. Some have timers on them but the one I've used goes until the water is gone. Some people use a pot of water, some use the microwave and some don't warm them at all.

  • I can see where a lot of people find them unnecessary, but for us we loved it. We traveled a lot with DD and it was great to have it so that you could get the temp just right on her bottles- we have an outlet in the car and it got used on many roadtrips.

You can also heat a cup of water to warm the bottle, but never put them in the microwave.

  • It would have been a huge waste of money for us, our DD likes her milk and formula cold, and the doctor said that is fine. (and I wouldnt want my milk luke warm) But you dont have to get it hot so even running the bottle under warm tap water warms it enough. and if you are mixing formula, you can just mix it with warmer water. You can always register for one and take it back if you decide you dont need it.

  • I'm one of the few people on here who actually loved the bottle warmer.  Most people say they are a waste of money but I found that mine warmed up a bottle a lot faster than a cup of hot water.
  • My sister bought one (14 dollars) and said it was the best thing she bought for my nephew and is giving me her old one. I'm taking it. Hope it still works!
  • With DD I didn't need one. For formula, I had room temperature water sitting out - either a Brita pitched or a jug of drinking water and used that to mix with formula.

Or I know lots of people that just heat a bowl/mug of water in the microwave then dip the bottle in that for a few seconds to warm it up slightly.

  • If u pump and freeze it is really nice to have. We used ours all the time

  • As my dr. put it, if you warm a bottle once, they'll want it EVERY time. If you never do, they'll do just fine with room temp. I've seen my friend be a slave to warming bottles and it just plain sucked for her, especially when I could just make one up really fast wherever I was. Just a thought.

  • I never used one and I didn't heat up my son's bottles.  It would have been a waste of $$ for us.

  • When we switched over to formula I just used room temp (and sometimes chilled) water. It made it so much easier when we were out and about. I could grab a bottle of water and the formula dispenser (loved the 3-section avent one!) and DS would be eating in no time.

  • DD was a summer baby so we didn't warm her bottle up initially.  When the weather got colder, it was nice to be able to warm up the bottles.  DD was very impatient when it came to being hungry, so I liked the quick nature of the bottle warmer, but if your baby is more patient, the bottle in the hot water works fine.

FWIW--if you have the possibility of lead in your pipes, you aren't suppose to run the water until it's warm for bottles.  Something about the longer the water runs, the more potential it has to pick up lead.  But if you have a filter on your faucet, you could run the water til it's warm, then use the filter.

  • I loved having a bottle warmer with DD, but I used the RTF formula with DD for the first 3 months. This time around, that will not be the case (if I FF).

  • We did not have one but my son drank expressed milk, which was so cold out of the fridge.  It took too long in the middle of the night to heat to room temp by running under the faucet, so we ended up buying one.  I'm glad we did.

If we had BF or used formula, we wouldn't have needed one.

  • We never got one. Our tap gets really hot very fast. We just fill a cup with water and place the bottle in the hot water for a minute or two. We did this with refrigerated and frozen breastmilk. Now we make bottles with cold filtered water and warm it to room temp the same way.

  • I have one and used it all of twice.  It was just as fast to let the tap warm up, I never felt like it was really all that accurate, just was more pain than helpful.  I also tried to make Sam's bottles more room-temp because feeding him away from the house was a lot easier.  I would just fill a dasani bottle with water when I left and by time I needed to make a bottle, the water would be room temp.
  • No. I nursed but also ff baby. We got a filtered water jug and left it on the counter. The water was room temp, Tanner didn't mind. Once you start heating up bottles all the time it can be really become a PITA.

  • For me, I think that's going to be something I register for but might not buy if I don't get it.  If someone else wants to buy it for me as a gift, I'll try it.  I just might not spend my own money on it.

(I hope that doesn't sound gift-grabby, but a bottle warmer is one of those nice, relatively inexpensive things that you can add to your registry.  People like buying them, and given that they're like $25, why not add it?  I feel the same way about the wipe warmer.)

Which one did you purchase?  I would love to have the option to warm up bottles in the car as well!  We are planning a road trip and that sounds like a great one to have.  TIA!

  • absolutely not, it's a waste of money. if you're dealing with cold formula/breast milk, just put it in a cup of hot water from the sink or microwave the water first and sit the bottle in it. when my son was on strictly formula, i just made new batches of formula every time and used room temperature water and put that into the bottle and mixed the formula.
