I'm at my wits end

So in a previous post, I was asking about CIO in the morning, and we tried the suggestion last night of putting her down a little later. We put her down at 7:25 last night (as opposed to 6:45ish), in the hopes she would sleep a little later. She didn't fall asleep until about 8:00. She woke up at 4:40. I went in to put her back down, which was actually relatively easy. She woke again at 6:10 for good. We tried to leave her in there, but she got hysterical. I got her about 6:40. I just can't believe that 10 hours is enough for her, especially because she was so cranky all morning. At daycare, she naps about 2 hours, sometimes a little less. At home it's never more than 1.5 hours. I just feel like she's not getting enough sleep, and it's making both of us cranky. DH had to basically push me out the door to work today because I started to lose it.

I'm considering trying to find a sleep consultant, because I don't know what else to do. We have a doctors appointment today for something else, so I'll ask her, but haven't typically gotten very useful advice on sleep from her.

Help!

Re: I'm at my wits end

  • Sorry, I totally understand the sleep frustration, especially when you feel like your LO is not getting the sleep they need.

It seems to me like the later bedtime is not the answer. Can you try the opposite tack? Put her to bed earlier? It wouldn't have to be forever, but just for a while to get her used to sleeping longer stretches.

Yesterday, J only napped for 40 minutes (ACK). We put him to sleep at 6, and he slept until 6. I gave him a bottle, and he slept for another hour! (Usually he's more like 6:30-6:30 with sometimes a bottle at around 5:00). So maybe that would work for you?

  • Is she teething or something that could really be upsetting her? Honestly, I'd probably try Motrin before anything else.

I think 6:45 is on the early side, but I've read somewhere not to change their bedtime by more than like 15 minutes per night.

Everyone has crappy nights/weeks. It's possible that it's really just a phase. If not, I really liked the Ferber book for info on routines and sleep training, even if you don't CIO. And if you do chose to CIO, we had a really good experience at 5 mos that I think set C up to be a really good sleeper (but I DID NOT say that because I DO NOT want to jinx myself. KNOCK ON WOOD!) from there on out.

  • Our DD is not a good napper so I am certain I can't give any good advice there. However, when DD wakes up pre-6am it usually seems like it is because she is very hungry or thirsty.

  • Based on what I have read, one to two night wakings are normal into the second year of life.
