Ferber bust = crying 6 hours

I'm at such a loss what to do. My 2 year old has been up and down all night for weeks (I've ruled out ears and teeth). I finally decided to do Ferber by the book last night. She cried from 9:30pm-3:30am. I finally gave up and sat on the couch with her where she dozed. I feel sick to my stomach. Anything else I can try> Thanks

  • What calmed your LO down, being with Mommy?

We did CIO before DS was old enough to have separation anxiety, I don't know how much help I could be.

  • I think separation anxiety is a big part of it. I wouldnt mind cuddling her if she went right back to sleep but the moment she's back in the crib, she screams :-(
  • Yeah, I don't know how to answer the separation anxiety at night for kids that are DS age or older (19mo+).

I notice he's getting it though lately though.  I know as they get older they are more aware of their surroundings for long periods of time, which explains your LO crying.

  • Have you tried sitting on the floor or a chair and holding her hand through the crib? I"ve used that trick on my DS on nights he won't go to sleep.

This, or patting her back while she lays down in her bed?

  • I don't have any advice for you, but my heart goes out to you.  There is nothing harder.  We have been doing a modified Ferber method on Allison this week (since I'm off work).  She hasn't struggled as much as your LO, but it is still hard to hear her cry even for a short time.  Hopefully it is a phase she will grow out of.  Until then, if it was me, I would probably cave and put her right back in bed with me...sorry, I'm weak Embarrassed

  • Honestly?  That's really common.  A lot of people don't have success with Ferber because constantly going in to their room makes them cry more and makes the whole evening worse.  I've read about that a lot on here.  What worked wonders for us is CIO.  We did it when G was 7 months and have had to do it here and there since then.  The first 2 nights are the worst.  They will cry.  And at 2 years old, it's also because she wants you and she knows that the more she cries, you will eventually come and get her.  She's smart.  I know it's hard, but give CIO a week.  It will work.  For us, the first 2 nights were hell.  Night 3 we saw improvement and by night 7, she STTN and never went back.  G just had RSV and we got into some bad sleeping habits.  We did CIO again and she's back to going to bed without fussing.  It works.  My advice for you?  Turn off the monitor, pop open a bottle of wine and watch a movie with DH.  If you start tonight, you'll be in good shape for Monday when you go back to work, if you work.
