3rd Trimester

Baby is measuring a week behind.

I had an ultrasound yesterday and my baby is measuring 21w 1d, but I am 22w 1d. Every ultrasound that I have had has been on time. I had one when I was 6w and they confirmed my EDD to be 5-2-2011. Now she is measuring behind. The Dr hasn't contacted me yet, but the Ultrasound Tech said they will probably be keeping a close eye on her. Everything was fine. Her heart looked great, her kidneys, bladder, and stomach were there. Her femur was measuring 22w. It was just her head that was measuring behind. I can't help but worry.

Does anybody have experience with your baby measuring behind?

Esma: I'll turn him into a flea. A harmless little flea. Then Ill put that flea in a box. And put that box inside another box. Mail that box to myself. And when it arrives. ILL SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER. Its brilliant, brilliant, brilliant I tell you. Genius I say.
Or to save on postage. Ill poison him with this.

Re: Baby is measuring a week behind.

  • One of my twins has always measured small, and according to their weights, is probably 1 to 2 weeks "behind" her brother. Babies are all different sizes -- if the doc is concerned, he/she will monitor you more closely. But don't let it worry you at this point!

  • With ultrasound growth measurements there is a margin of error of +/- 2 weeks. You are perfectly normal and so is your LO.

  • A week off is totally normal. Just like outside babies, inside ones grow at different rates. They are different sizes and go through growth spurts ar different times. Plus positioning, the limitations of the software, etc. can make a difference. The older the fetus, the more variation there can be. Our LO has been 5 days behind since week 7 when there is little variation between LO's (we did IUI with meds so there is no question of dating). It is just who he is and how he grows.

It may have been inappropriate for your sonographer to say what she did. That is for a dr to judge and my dr doesn't think twice about anything off by just a week.

  • I had the opposite happen with Emma. She kept measuring a week or two ahead. I thought my due date could have calculated wrong even though I was charting to get pregnant with her. How could this be? She's not measuring correctly. Turns out she gained all of her weight quickly and it leveled out slowly at the end. She weighed 5lbs 15oz at 36 weeks gestation when she was born. She's a year old and 25 lbs now. Perfectly healthy.

Now what could be happening with your LO is the reverse. Slowly gaining weight and then it could really pick up just before delivery. I wouldn't sweat this at all.

  • I would not worry too much.  I was measuring on time for awhile, and then a week ahead, at my 21 week sonogram I was a week behind, and then at my 28 week sonogram I was a week ahead again.  They grow at different rates.  In the end I figure all that really matters is that she comes out healthy.

Also....  I have had 8 or 9 sonograms at this point.  So watching her growth pattern has been interesting.

  • I had an appointment Monday and I'm measuring a week ahead.  I asked my doctor if there is any cause for concern and she said absolutely not.  My doctor said anything 3cm +/- is perfectly fine.  I also have a pregnant friend that's a month ahead of me and she had an appointment yesterday and was measuring 3 weeks behind.  Both of us are fine and were told not to worry about a thing.

  • At my first ultrasound my baby was measuring 2 and a half weeks behind. They said they changed my due date (which I was sad about - who wants to be fewer weeks pregnant?!). I had another ultrasound a month later and baby was 2 weeks behind. At my next doc appointment when they measured my belly (they had the original due date, not the changed one... so somewhere that got dropped) and told me my bump was measuring about 2 weeks small - but not to worry. So I figure baby is growing - so no concern at this point :). Good luck - I'm SURE your LO is absolutely fine.
