GD mamas- question regarding baby's size

last week i had a growth ultrasound for LO.  she is in the 87 percentile overall, weighing 6lbs 4 ounces.  her abdomen is in the 98 percentile.  so they are concerned about shoulder dystocia b/c of her bigger body, that said they did say her head was in a larger percentile as well, but not as big as her abdomen.  i go back on the 14th for a follow-up u/s and they also recommend amnio to check maturity of her lungs b/c they would want to induce early due to her size.

for the record, i am not comfortable with induction, especially just for suspected size.  i have already given birth vaginally once.

i would really like to hear from anyone experiencing, or has previously experienced, a similar situation- mainly the larger abdomen percentile associated with GD.  thanks.

  • Not there yet, but will be interested to see the responses.  Are you just diet-controlled with your GD?  We're not doing any growth u/s unless I don't keep things controlled, but I'm on the same page as you with being hesistant to induce based on a growth u/s even though I do understand the whole GD can throw a wrench in it.  GL!

  • my little one is in the 95th percentile at last u/s she was 5#4 at 32 weeks. plan for another u/s at 37 then my perinatologist is going to make recommendations so we''ll have to see.

  • I'm pretty much in the same boat. She was at 6 lbs. 1 oz. 10 days ago. According to my official due date she's at 97+ overall and abdomen (head is larger too, but not as high of a %).

I start weekly appointments tomorrow, with another u/s next week. My doctor's biggest concern is the abdomen as well. He said it's a sign of shoulder width. He said that while he wants to keep an eye on her overall size, he really wants to monitor the abdomen. If this continues (or if he sees something on the non-stress tests or she hits 9 lbs) he has brought up the possibility of inducing or scheduling a c-section. I've told him I'm fine with whatever he feels is best.

What made me really decide to go with what my doctor feels is best... a close friend just labored for 24 hours (including pushing for 3+ hours) and the baby's head might have made it out, but the shoulders were not going to follow. They had to push the baby back up and do a c-section. She said that had she known what was going to happen she would have preferred to have scheduled a c-section.

  • I've been really concerned about my baby's growth, too, especially because I've had GD since 19 weeks.  My doctor was worried that we might have to induce early, but at my 30 week ultrasound he was only 3 lbs 4 oz and in the 64% percentile.  I know he still has a lot of time to grow, so I hope he stays right around that range and doesn't start growing a lot faster than he should.  Are you on insulin?  My GD has been diet and exercise controlled so far, but my doctor did mention that being on insulin can result in bigger babies, and she said I would have to have a lot more growth ultrasounds.  I'm not really sure why this would be, but maybe that's why?

  • I've got GD and I"m on insulin to control my fasting numbers, and at my 35 week growth ultrasound baby girl was only 5 days ahead of schedule. I've never heard that insulin yields drastically bigger babies, but I'm living proof that such is not the case. She was 5.5 lbs, which, if I figure she gains another half a pound until they induce me at 39 weeks, only puts her at 7.5-8 lbs, give or take.
