2nd Trimester

Ultrasound Question....

Hey,

This is my first time being pregnant and I feel silly for asking some questions but I just cant understand this one. Im getting kind of jealous seeing women having ultrasound pictures at 8 weeks and 14 weeks and such and I havent had one and Im about 16 weeks. I asked my doctor when I could have one about a month ago and he said I can have one between 18 and 20 weeks. Is it ok that they are waiting that long to take my first ultrasound? I mean I have heard the heatbeat twice now and I was just wondering what gives? Am I the only one that has to wait this long and why?

Re: Ultrasound Question....

  • You are not the only one, don't worry.

Lots of people have early ultrasounds to date their pregnancy or they are high risk. I had an ultrasound early because I had bleeding- trust me when I say I would have rather not had that emergency!

I know it's hard because you want to see your LO but take solace in the fact that you are having a healthy and normal pregnancy so far!

You can always go to a place that does "entertainment" ultrasounds. We did one with my first and I thought it was totally worth it.

We did a 3d/4d ultrasound at 15 weeks to find out the sex of our first baby. It cost about $60 and was about half an hour. It was actually a really great experience. I would google 3d/4d ultrasounds in your area and see what's available. The prices range a lot depending on where you live.

I had my first at 14 weeks, because they thought I was 15 and was measuring behind and wanted to make sure everything was okay..turns out everything is fine, just miss-estimated the due date.

  • I had a loss before and thats why I got many. But now my Dr does one verytime I go which is weird (its a 10-15 sec check to see heartbeat and growth). Its funny because my OBGYN is like 100 years old and he looks and says everything is good - we barley see anything. :)
  • That is actually the standard to just have one at 20 weeks. Some practices give you one at the beginning to date the pregnancy too. Other than that, you normally only get more if there are complications, you are high risk, or you have a history of m/c. So, it is actually a good thing to only get one or two during your pregnancy.

  • I had an ultrasound at ten weeks when I went to the doctor because she thought I should be eleven weeks. Also she couldn't hear the heartbeat with the doppler so off to get an ultrasound. I just had one at 21 weeks and I'll have in a month because they couldn't get all the measurements they needed.

  • My OB doesn't do an ultrasound until week 20 unless they suspect problems. Ditto what the insurance company will pay for. And in fact that is the only standard one done (and paid for) in the entire pregnancy.
