Moms of Outside Babies

How long did your LO use a swing, if you had one?

I'm currently registered for one, but I'm debating its worth now. It's on the list of things that will be sent directly to Egypt, so the babe won't be able to make use of it until we get back here, which could be anywhere from 6 weeks old to 3-4 months old and probably towards the later end of that spectrum.

How long did you find your swing useful? Will it still be worth it if we don't even start using it until 3-4 months? The weight limit on the one I picked says 25lbs, so I guess that means it's good for a while, but the reviews say that with a heavier/older baby, the motor is not strong enough to actually make it swing, though the music and lights still work.

If you did use yours later, can you recommend one that still swings with a heavier/older baby?

  • randomly found this post- DD is still using it. I might be able to use it at month 5 but probably not much more after that- but some use it till they are like 9months old.

  • When you register for your swing you need to check the weight limit. I did this for Emma's. I bought the generic Graco girl swing. We've used it since we brought Emma home. She still naps in it and she's a year old now. She's trying to walk and is clumsy at times. She'll reach for her bottle on the coffee table and can't balance herself so well. I put her in the swing to take her bottle and she loves it. She weighs 25 lbs and it swings just fine. I think this model we got goes up to 30-35 lbs.
  • I don't remember exactly, but maybe 5 months or so? So not too too long, but still definitely found it worth it for those 5 months.

  • The bulk of the time that DS used the swing was 0-6mos. And then after he started getting mobile then he really didn't want to be confined in it. We finally put it away around 9mos. DS never made weight limit.

  • My kid never liked her swing.  It was kind of useful in the newborn period but by 3-4 months, forget it.

  • My babies loved the swing although, this time we are going with a bouncy seat because I think my four year old dd will try to be a "little mommy" and I have visions of her trying to get him out and dropping him...

Anyway, both of my kids used it until around 6 months... they were on the longer side and when their feet would dangle over so far, I stopped using it.

I don't know if your baby will like it that much if you don't use it from the start though. By 3-4 months, it won't be used to the motion of it and he/she might not like it by then. I would go bouncy seat if I was in your position.

  • DS used it until about 9mos old.  He wasn't mobile until 10mos but at 8-9 mos we started to notice the swing was really laboring to rock him.  He loved that thing so we hated to give it up.  It was especially useful in the first 6mos.  Just for reference, DS isn't even 25lbs yet at 18mos of age and he's pretty average as far as weight sizes go.

  • I think we only used it for the first 3-4 months actually. He got too big for it!

  • My child used the swing for about 6mo. From age 3mo- 9mo, until he became mobile then he didn't want to be confined. I really found it useful during those 6mo though!

  • DD loved the swing, but by 4 months she was too big for it.  She was able to grab the mobile, and started pulling down on it.
