Kick counts?!?! quick question

I have a real quick question on fetal kick counts. I have never had to count them before because my baby moves around like a mad man. The past 4 days his movements have slowed down to almost no movement at all.  Are they supposed to be 10 every hour, because my doctor told me last night that I should have 10 every 12 hours.....I was really confused. This was a doctor in the practice that I have not seen before but he just made it seem like he had no time for my questions.

 Thanks!

Re: Kick counts?!?! quick question

  • I thought it was 10 kicks in an hour. 10 every 12 hours seems awful slim.

  • My midwife said 10 kicks in 2 hours.

  • Wait.  You have felt almost no movement in 4 days??  You need to call your doctor NOW or go right into L&D.

Kick counts should have 10 movements in 2 hours or less during an active period, NOT 10 movements every 12 hours.

  • I was at the doctors yesterday and they had me hooked up to a monitor for 20 min, the heart beat was great but he wasnt moving so they sent me over to L&D, once i got there i guess he woke up because they saw what they wanted to see.

The past 3-4 days he has had slight movements but nothing to what he was before.

The dr in L&D, that i had never seen from the practice was on call last night and he told me 10 kicks every 12 hours. Which that seemed like a really long time i just wanted to get out of there so i took it and left.

I am going to call my OBs office soon and say something because that WAYYYY wrong.

  • It's 10 movements in 2 hours. If you're not feeling any movement at all, you need to get to L&D.

I agree with this. Have you also tried drinking some orange juice and seeing if that brings on some movement?

  • Do you think maybe you could have misunderstood the doctor?  I was told that I should have 10 kicks within an hour and to check every 12 hours.  Basically, I have to do kick counts twice a day and each time I should feel at least 10 kicks in an hour.

  • My doctor said 10 in 12 hours as well... I've never done them because she has very regular active periods and I get far more than 10 movements out of each of those.

  • My doc wants to see 4 movements in an hour, or 10 in two hours.  It varies from doctor to doctor, it seems.

  • I had the same thing happen over the weekend and called my Dr. on Monday morning. They had me go to L&D. Baby was fine, but I was having contractions and didn't even know it! While there they got stronger and stronger and my body was trying to into labor. Luckily, they were able to get the contractions to stop with meds. I would definitely call your Dr. or just go straight to L&D.

  • My doctor and what I've read says 10 movements in an hour. I think your doctor is saying that you should do this once every 12 hours - essentially pick the two hours a day that the baby is typically most active and count to make sure they have 10 movements at both of those hours. My doctor says all movements count - including hiccups.
