What is NST?

Have seen a few posters mention this, and didn't see it in the glossary. Just curious!

Re: What is NST?

  • Non Stress Test.... usually on the monitors for an hour or so. sometimes they have you press a button when you feel baby kick or move. the make sure the heart rate is good, see if you are contracting... and sometimes follow up with an u/s to make sure everything is ok.

i have not had to have them, but from what my SIL had to do, i think that is about it. others may have more to add.

  • NST stands for non-stress test.

Totally painless test that measures your contractions and the baby's heart rate simultaneously to ensure the baby's well-being.

I have them done every week because I have Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension.  It's been explained to me that a positive outcome means there's a "very low chance of stillbirth within the next seven days."

ETA: I don't even have to press a button.  I literally just lie back in a really comfy recliner.  As long as A's heart rate shows at least three jumps within 20 minutes, I'm good to go.  They can take up to an hour, but if all goes well, you can be done in 20 min.

  • Non Stress Test.

Its a test for mom and baby.

You sit in a chair for a time frame (usually 20 minutes) and they have two monitors on you, one for contractions and one that tracks baby's heartrate.

They want to see accelerations and decels in baby's heartrate in that time frame and also measure and time any contractions you may have.

A lot of high risk girls get them every week, including myself, I go twice a week.

  • Also, there are contractions that show up on the machine that you are not really feeling, but are detectable on the machine.
