This is our first baby (yay!) I am 11w3d and I have no idea when and what I am supposed to register for. Our parents are each buying us one big ticket item apiece plus I'm sure smaller stuff as well. Should we put at least one bigger item or handle the remaining 'big' stuff ourselves? Any suggestions or links to sample lists would be great!

We registered early because Sears has completion coupons you can use ahead of time to save money on the things you plan to buy yourself (ar least in Canada). The things on our registry we are leaving on for other people are:
pack and play ($239)
cloth diapers ($80)
cloth diaper covers ($9)
cloth diaper liners ($10)
swing ($189)
monitor ($99)
thermometer set ($40)
We also registered for a $270 menonite rocker we chose- my family will be going in together on it. I left some bigger stuff on our registry because my family has a lot of family friends who I grew up with who will 'go in together' on larger items. There isn't a lot on here, but it is what we need and I figure a lot of people will just buy clothes anyway- I'd rather let them enjoy choosing the clothes.
Congratulations on your first baby! And what a great job getting a head start on everything.
Thebump.com actually has a checklist (just like theknot did for weddings) that helps you space everything out and figure out when/what to do. I am 22 weeks and got the reminder to register within the past few weeks or so...so you are definitely ahead of the game! (Good work)
This is our first as well, and we are using the checklist we found here
We are not only using the registry just as a registry but as a checklist for ourselves as well, so we will literally put everything we need on it (it'll be easier to purchase the left overs that way before the baby comes). We bought the crib, changing table, bedding set (complete with mobile, rug, border, and wall hanging) and are also planning on buying the rocker and bookcase for ourselves. Everything else will stay on our registry and we'll see what happens. Our families have already offered to purchase the travel system and the co-sleeper...so those we will keep off the registry so no one else snatches them up.
