Why a tubal over a vasectomy?

Just curious.

Why are some of you choosing (or will choose in the future) a tubal litigation over your husband getting a vasectomy. To my knowledge, a tubal is much more involved (anesthesia, internal surgery, longer recovery) than an outpaitient procedure like a vasectomy.

DH and I had this talk before marriage that when we were done he would get a vasectomy. Just wondering the reasons behind the opposite choice.

Re: Why a tubal over a vasectomy?

  • We're considering a tubal after #3 for a few reasons.

    1) I have health reasons to limit my number of children (mild pre-e with both children and an adverse reaction to the pill, so my OB said one more birth is my absolute limit), but if something were to happen to me DH might eventually want more.  If something happened to him I still wouldn't want to risk more pregnancies so it seems fair that I have the permanent procedure if possible.

    2) A tubal is more effective than a vasectomy.  I've heard quite a few stories of failed vasectomies, but have never heard of a failed tubal (not that it can't happen, but from what I understand it's far less likely).  Since there are health reasons for me to limit pregnancies, I'd rather the more effective surgery

    3) I had a c section the first time around and a VBAC the second, so there's a good chance #3 will be a C again (I plan to try for VBAC, but I know there's a chance of a C).  I would only get a tubal if they can perform it concurrent with a C section.

If I have a successful VBAC for #3 we'll likely combine a paraguard IUD (which I have now) with a vasectomy until I hit menopause since it's not a good idea for me to have more than 3 pregnancies.

  • I will have a tubal IF we have a #2 since I have to have c/s, I figure while they're in there taking LO out, they might as well tie the tubes as well. I wouldn't elect to just have it done though, if we don't have #2, I will most likely prevent getting pg with birth control. I don't think anything would sell DH on getting a vasectomy, he gets a bit queasy & freaked out when it comes to medical procedures. I can't believe he didn't pass out in the OR when they were doing my c/s.

PP was talking about tubals growing back, just wanted to say that I have an aunt who had a tubal & her tubes grew back together & she got pg again (didn't end with a sticky baby, but still), she's also the same aunt who got pg on the pill (DD was also a pill baby), we've got quite a few fertile myrtles in our family. lol!

  • We're doing both. I'm having a c/s with LO#2, so it won't lead to an additional surgery or recovery for me. My dr. said if we really want to be sure we don't have any more kids, we should both have it done b/c neither procedure is 100% effective.

If it weren't for my having a c/s, we would probably just do the vasectomy and an IUD.

This for us. I'm already doing the c-section so there is no need for both of us to have procedures done. If by some chance, we concieved another after my tubal than it was obviously meant to be.

  • Ditto with PP's about c/s.  If I have a c/s with #2 I will just have them do a tubal while they are in there.  I still may make DH get a vasectomy though because I'm paranoid like that and I really don't want to have to worry about birth control if I get my tubes tied (and they are not 100% so I would worry).  So our house will probably be both.
